???????? This January I finished my internship at the Danish embassy in Paris ???????? I have had the honor to intern at the Danish embassy's press and culture department in Paris from September 2023 to January 2024. ? These past month have given me an insight into how cultural diplomacy works. More precisely, I have learned how a Danish cultural institution like Le Bicolore carves out a place in the vast, and highly competitive, market of cultural and artistic institutions in Paris. From digital communication on social media, to partnerships and exhibition openings, this internship has taught me many valuable lessons. ? Here are my main takes: ?On Social Media you need to be: efficient, intentional and consistent. ?Culture and art remain crucially important as it is where curious humans meet newness with open-mindedness.? ?Share the good and the bad with who you work with--your colleagues are here to help you grow, to help you learn. ?You learn a lot by doing but don't underestimate what you can learn from watching. ?

Typical ingredients for success in entering a career in international affairs: (These do not reflect how I think things should be. They are anecdotal and based on my personal observations.) 1. Masters degree from prominent Western policy program (such as the APSIA schools). This is less about the content of the program and more about the alumni networks and career development resources and insights that help their graduates navigate the opaque entry into careers in international policy and development. 2. Multiple internships in international organizations, NGOs, government, think tanks, etc. Typically you might start by volunteering or interning at a small, not-so-well-known organization and then build up to the more prestigious internships. 3. Passport and socioeconomic privilege. Having a passport that allows easy access to do internships in Western countries where many prestigious international organizations are headquartered. Having the economic means and/or social capital to support doing un-/underpaid internships or similar career development opportunities in very expensive cities (New York, Geneva, Washington, DC, etc.) 4. Excellent, near-native spoken and written English. Typically at least one other UN language at a high level as well. 5. Psychological resilience, social support and long-term networking. Excellent, well-qualified candidates are common in this field. Most people have a difficult path into an international relations career. You will need to be able to face a lot of rejection and keep going. You will need to believe in yourself and have support from family and friends to keep pursuing your dream despite the years of insecurity. You will need to be constantly gathering information through networking about opportunities and how to navigate the opaque entry pathways into this field.

Who wants to do an internship with me? I'm looking for a bright student, with strong analytical skills, who understands the stakes for different groups and levels of governance, who is interested in geopolitics and regions, and who knows how to write text that people want to read. -No need to be a political science or a European studies expert -Often interns had a Masters degree, but I have sometimes had brilliant people here who had a Bachelor. -It's necessary to be willing to absorb a lot of new information and read a lot -You'll have to unlearn probably as much as to learn Also: I'm not looking for super innovative fancy CV or cover letters: simple, clear, to the point, well-written. Cover letters are a formal exercise, they say also something about how you're able to navigate a formal world. What you can expect: -A tailor-made internship that helps you test and build your skills while matching my needs -A clear learning process: we assess your learning expectations at the beginning, do a mid-term assessment to see if we need to re-arrange tasks and evaluate the shared experience at the end -Mentoring: I'll do my best to help you connect with the people you need, the concepts and projects you didn't know of, help you build muscle in the fields your most interested in, stretch your understanding of topics, structures and help you in creating your next opportunities -Calm environment: a super small office and team here in Strasbourg, no institutional beehive -Working with the rest of the team based in Brussels The AER office in Strasbourg is located on the 6th floor and the lift only goes to the 5th, so it's not an accessible office. There will be works over the Summer, so maybe this will change, but I don't have this information. #internship #policylearning

Young African professional in Europe, where do I even begin? (2ème coup de gueule de la journée... let's go!) International student struggles... From my experience, it's about being qualified for a position, going through internship offers, only to be met with "EU nationals only". Or better yet, it's about getting through the next stage, and receiving a cold email that says, "Make sure you can work in the EU, outside of your permit of residence and oh, we don't sponsor visa requests" by multinationals & NGOs. And then there's my personal favorite—going through interviews, completing assigned tasks to assess my expertise, being offered an internship, having my university sign the agreement, repeatedly asking about the next steps and being assured that all is in order... Just to have the HR representative reach out again to say "Your Moroccan passport is an issue", regardless of me mentioning my nationality at least 4 times during the recruitment process (during which she was present) and asking during the interview about what they do to ensure people from diverse backgrounds and nationalities are included and supported. Let's talk about the elephant in the room. The struggles of being an international student or professional in Europe are real. Despite our qualifications, skills, and enthusiasm, we face barriers that seem insurmountable. The disappointment of being rejected because of nationality hits hard. It's not just a matter of a missed opportunity; it's a blow to our confidence and a brutal reminder of the uphill battle we face. And let's not forget the countless hoops we jump through, from interview tasks to signing paperwork, only to have our hopes dashed by a single line in an email: "Your passport is an issue." But you know what? We refuse to be silenced. We refuse to let these setbacks define us. It's time to raise our voices and demand change. Let's hold employers accountable for their discriminatory practices. Let's push for policies that promote diversity and inclusion. And let's create a future where every talented individual has a fair shot at success, regardless of where they come from. Our experiences matter. Our voices matter. It's time to make them heard. My professor, when he heard about one of my experiences on my journey to finding an internship left me with the following powerful words, reminding me that quitting is not an option; That people like us have no choice but to fight back against a system of oppression and its perpetrators, from non-inclusive policies, to careless employers who use the word "international" in their name as decoration only: "I, just like many other professors, have great faith in you and the work you have set out to accomplish to change the course of this ugly world we live in. You are not a quitter, by any means (and you know it). Think of this as an unfortunate hurdle on your way to your next destination." #InternationalStudent #ProfessionalLife #Inclusion #Equality #SpeakOut
