INTERN UPDATE: Caleb Makoff is a Project Manager Intern at CE this summer. We appreciate your work ethic and are excited to watch you grow in the PM role. "I've just completed my freshman year in the Construction Management program at NDSU. This summer I have the privilege of working for CE under Project Manager Brady McDonald on the New Valley Middle School project in Grand Forks, ND. Brady has entrusted me with various tasks, including conducting takeoffs to enhance my understanding of plan reading and problem-solving in design issues. Additionally, I've been actively involved in coordinating with subcontractors to manage submittals for the project. I'm sincerely grateful for the warm welcome and supportive atmosphere within the company, and I'm eager to continue expanding my knowledge and skills throughout the remainder of the summer." #buildingfortomorrow #interns2024

Meet our current #Summer2024 #intern, Matthew Bond, George Mason University class of #2026. Why FHWA Central Federal Lands? CFL offers a very hands-on experience where not only do I get an in-person introduction to the #constructionfield, but I get to do so in our #nationalparks and other amazing areas! How Your Experience Has Been So Far: This #internship has gone beyond what I’ve expected I’ve had the #incredibleopportunity to be on the construction site almost daily shadowing the #siteinspectors and learning directly from our #projectengineer. What have you been working on? I’m mainly working on the scenic loop repair project in Theodore Roosevelt National Park south unit in #NorthDakota. A typical day on site I shadow the inspectors and get to learn about project operations, design implementations, and everything else there is to know about a construction site. At the end of the day, I write a daily report on what I’ve observed and learned throughout the day. What have you learned so far? I’ve learned much about #roadwaydesign, how they’re built, and the challenges associated with the process. By being included in project meetings I have gained a basic understanding of the administrative side of project operations as well. 30 DAYS Challenge with Adedamola Okoya-Johnson DAY 23: Importance of Construction Site Visit Growing up in a developing environment, I was surrounded by construction sites. This exposure gave me a basic understanding of building materials and construction methods, which significantly helped me during my architecture theory classes. Seeing these processes firsthand made concepts clearer, in ways that textbooks alone couldn't. This is why internships and industrial training (IT) are so important for architecture students. They provide the opportunity to apply classroom knowledge in real-world situations and gain practical insight that enriches learning. In my opinion, practical experience is essential for anyone pursuing architecture or any other hands-on field. How has visiting construction sites helped you during your internship? #Construction #ArchitectureStudent #MyArchitectureJourney

Is your life a loop? Remembering the days during my internship 2023(July-nov) I was around the ppl who were from different states and different backgrounds and proficient in what they were working after seeing them I questioned myself what did I even learn in the 4.5 years of my college life? I am so dumb and do not know how things are working but the people around me are good everyone is helping and learning from each other I used to always feel nervous and question myself that I should improve a lot I have learnt a lot I'm always grateful for the ppl these were the ppl who helped me during my thesis and also currently Do you think how much I even improved? As I told I improved a lot not even 1% I have to learn a lot more ————————————- The same things happening currently i am again around the ppl the ppl who are proficient and still learning but do you know what changed? Attitude towards seeing the things I tell myself it is okay to be dumb and learn. At the same time have your own respect.what you are good at others might not ,find it and write it in your journal or notes because these things are not going to end it's a whole life process I will be meeting proficient people even in the future so please know your strengths and weakness to protect yourself because you are not just dealing with our fellow architects you have to deal with the clients and everyone in the future and need to always stay strong #lifeofarchitect

We sat down with our intern, Camila Cortés, to get her take on what she’s been up to during her internship with our Northstar team. Camila’s greatest lesson learned at Northstar:?“The importance of effective communication, leadership, and organizational skills. Three words come to mind every time I describe what Northstar does; those three words, I believe, consolidate what a true project manager is. It was the moment when I had to do a public speaking workshop with Commercial Real Estate Success Training (CREST) Internship, and this grabber we had to create came to me. It gave me the idea of seeing Northstar like master Lego builders, arranging together every block to create a masterpiece. Nothing is better than having a job where interacting with people in the right way is the key to the project’s success.” Regarding the skills she acquired, “I gained a deep understanding of the importance of the Owner’s Project Manager (OPM) role, which I was unfamiliar with in Colombia. The internship allowed me to truly appreciate the value of this role and be a part of it. Additionally, I gained insight into new construction methods and how projects are meticulously organized to increase efficiency and minimize errors throughout the construction process.” Read more about Camila in our “View from the Construction Site” series. IT'S CO-OP AND INTERN SEASON IN THE CONSTRUCTION INDUSTRY! In the next few weeks, firms are onboarding young engineering, surveying, architecture, science, and construction management students. Let's help these students realize what great opportunities there are in the construction industry and let's help each other's students out. Students: Take advantage of your time in the office and field and learn all you can. Talk to people in your own company outside the group you are working in. On the site, ask questions of the construction manager and their team, and take the opportunity to learn from the many great tradespeople this industry has. Sometimes the best lesson you can take away from an internship is what you DON'T want to do. Don't feel bad about it, but don't burn your bridges. The construction industry, while large, is simultaneously small. A positive attitude can go a long way, and your team leader can often introduce you to someone who may be able to get you a job in an area you ARE interested in. But if you don't show up to learn and be the best you can, your team leader is unlikely to offer an introduction. Stories about bad attitudes in the field can spread like wildfire and quickly earn you a reputation (deserved or undeserved). Full-time team members: Reach out to your co-ops and interns and let them know you are open to questions. Mentor your co-ops and interns- these are the folks who will someday join your firm - or will join a competitor or client- your attitude matters! Reach out to your clients and volunteer to talk to their co-ops and interns if they are interested in your area of expertise. Ask your clients to speak to your co-ops if their ultimate career aspiration is something other than what is available at your firm, and help your students plan for their next internship with a company that better aligns with their goals. Co-op and internship programs are mutually beneficial- take advantage of the opportunity! #smeusa #co-ops #interns #construction

In his time as an intern this summer, Parker has "learned a lot about the construction processes, job tracking and team leadership while out here this summer; however I have learned even more about myself and what possibilities lay in store" along with a greater understanding of the heavy civil sector of the industry. #RLWrocks #SummerIntern #ConstructionIntern #HeavyCivilConstruction
