?? In the spirit of Labor Day, let’s talk first jobs: How much did you make? My first gig was a summer nanny job at 13, watching 3 kids. My mom made me a deal: save half for a school trip to Europe, and she’d cover the rest. $1,100 later, I was off exploring Europe before high school even started. Not too shabby, right? My first W2 gig? Then came my first W2 job—$4.75 an hour at a bakery in Laguna Niguel, CA. No license yet, so I hoofed it 2 miles each way. Character building, to say the least! ??Now it’s your turn: What was your first job, and how much did you make? #LaborDay #FirstJob #CareerJourney #careeradvice #medicalsales #salestips

Today's National Work Like A Dog Day To "work like a dog" means to work very hard and continuous. A trait that I honestly can't deny canines. So it's a sentiment that we've applied to us humans for quite sometime now. However even for us humans we tend to squabble about the definition of working hard. There is always one occupation type telling another " Ah. Come off it. You call that work? I'll tell what work is. . ." Over time I've come to terms with the process in the entirety. We praise and/or mock people for their education. Even make assumptions about this based on a person's occupation. Although through many a job search during my layoff 10 years ago I actually saw a company who wanted a masters degree for a janitor position. I scoffed and thought it was a typo. Then not long after I found myself getting employment as a janitor with my current employer largely because I was a substitute teacher. For substitute teacher positions in RPS you must have over 60 college credits to be considered. So we're talking at least an Associates Degree. I had more than that so I was good. Then I start to think about how much time and effort it took me to get my education. I was focusing on two different majors at two different schools. My days were long and to make ends meet I worked on weekends. As far as I'm concerned I worked like a dog for everything. The entire process of life and pursuing things in it was labor. Whether or not I knew it at the time for whatever I was working for, everything ended up being connected in the long run. I do believe like most I've had a long history of working like a dog. https://lnkd.in/ewfcpHRY #platedtraditionsrecipejournal #platedtraditions #introvertsinbusiness #foodie #foodblogger #smallbusinessbigdreams #smallbusinessbigheart #smallbusinessownerlife #culinary #CulinaryJourneys #CulinaryCreations #CulinaryDelights #culinaryarts

The power of the tactical sip… Slaughter and May are in full swing with working through applications for our summer vacation scheme. Hundreds of unbelievably talented students undertaking interviews - many for the first time. When I’m asked for last minute advice, I’ll always suggest embracing the ‘tactical sip’. When you’re nervous and asked a tricky question, it is all too tempting to answer immediately with a stream of thought. Don’t. Find a way to pause before you answer. A two second pause to gather your thoughts can mean the difference between a fantastic response and changing your mind mid-sentence. It can be bizarrely difficult to have this discipline when you’re nervous, so… take a sip of water. Hydration and brain co-ordination; what’s not to love?

What Was Your First Major Career Challenge? No degree. No experience. A few decades ago, that combination might have left you stuck. The world worked differently then—but I wasn’t about to let that stop me. I’ve worked jobs across a dizzying spectrum: ? Behind the counter at Fox Pharmacy (a family-owned spot in Newton, MA), CVS, Heartland, and Guardian Drugstores (pharmacy circuit complete!). ? Scooping ice cream (two shifts—sorry, Brigham’s, it wasn’t for me). ?As a landscaper, including one memorable moment when my boss dropped me off at my parents’ house to mow their lawn while they paid him. I quit the next day and took over mowing that lawn for years, as I should have. ? Caddy, lifeguard, telemarketer, tropical plant delivery guy, barback, bartender, waiter, dishwasher, club promoter, pizza-maker, DJ, bassist, writer, voice talent, producer, director, traffic reporter, Santa, and emcee. What did I learn? I could do anything I wanted to. Sure, none of these jobs were rocket science. The only real challenge was deciding exactly what I wanted to do. What made me happy? I think college is a great opportunity, but it isn’t for everyone—or maybe it’s not the right path at a particular moment. What’s important is the willingness to learn—always. LEARNING IS ALWAYS THE KEY! Emily Friedrich and I were talking about this the other day. Diana Moses, MBA,?and I discussed this too; Now, I’d love to hear from you: >> What have you learned from the challenging roles, projects, or situations?<< P.S. #StillLearning #Everyday #CareerJourney #LessonsLearned

RUN….RUN….RUN…. Stay as far away from this LA as you physically can until they address the serious failings in the children’s services department of Herefordshire council that go right to the very top!! The ‘professionals’ (I use that word loosely) higher up are selfish, egotistical and manipulative! even after accepting a mountain of failings imposed on a family they continue to make sure everything fits the narrative and agenda they have chosen so that they can continue to hide the severe magnitude of the failings and mess ups that have been and continue to be made. The children are sadly just collateral damage in their mission to hide the truth! They ignore court orders, court approved plans and abuse families that they are meant to support all while turning a blind eye to the abuse children are suffering while in their care! or they make a never ending list of excuses and reasons as to why they missed the abuse that was inflicted on the children while in placement!….There are a few SWs that are genuinely good at their job and are trying to make a difference to the failing and inadequate department within the council but they can only do so much when some of failings are happening because SWs come and go so quickly as they struggle to maintain steady staffing partly because SWs are being over worked, over stretched with extremely high case loads with not enough hours in a day to be able to adequately manage and safe guard all children in their case loads but also because serious failings are happening higher up the career ladder. Then sadly when mistakes are made, failings happen and there is evidence given to support those claims those higher up have no choice but to acknowledge and accept those claims BUT they then very quickly put the blame on the SWs that are on the ‘ground’ trying their best to do the job and working with the families which means they then are the ones that have to face the backlash from the families, those close to the families and the general public are lead to believe that the SWs are the ones to blame for the issues so they become the focus and targets of the frustration, pain and anger……but just like most things you have those that want to help and make the service better you have th other side of workers that don’t have the right intentions. For example one of the SWs in the children with disability team who is actively going behind parents backs encouraging family members to take restraining orders out on the parents even though they have had no contact with them in over 2.5years! Last time I checked if you’re having very minimal to no contact it’s not harassment? Or maybe I have it wrong which means the police officer I spoke to has it wrong as well.

When I was younger I watched all of the Silent Witness series with my mum. It’s a shared interest we have and we still watch the show to this day. I wanted to be a Forensic Scientist for years and could picture myself in a white coat spending my days with my head in a microscope discovering new evidence and potentially making a huge difference to the world. (I had a huge pinch me moment when I got my 1st science laboratory assistant job and was handed my own white coat). But as they say, the best laid plans... Life has a funny way of showing you what is meant for you! I found myself working in administrative roles from the age of 18 and loved how my organisation skills, communication and ability to set up processes quickly and efficiently, got me promoted into bigger supporting roles. Later in life, when my husband and I lived abroad for his work, I started to work in Executive Assistant roles and realised that the strategic partnership and the proactive, rather than reactive, way of working was where I excelled. I am a natural problem solver, organiser, and forward thinker, which meant I was perfect for the role of EA. I love working in a fast-paced environments. I love being relied on. I love helping people with their problems. No two days are ever the same, and I know I make a real difference to the people I work with. Looking back, I see that becoming an EA was not a big departure from my scientist dreams but rather an adaption to the skills I learned. Science taught me to be methodical, curious, and harnessed my solutions-oriented skills, which continue to serve me well in my role as an EA. What did you want to be growing up? #executiveassistant #virtualassistant #ea
