GamProtect - or GamShutthatdoor? Another snazzy label, but does it justify the hype? The Betting and Gaming Council and the UK Gambling Commission would dearly like you yo think so. The basic concept is that if in its interactions with a customer a signed up operator feels the need to close the account of that customer, that the operator can then register the customer with GamProtect, whereupon all other signed up operators will be informed and expected to also close any accounts which they identify this customer having with them. In principle it seems laudible. If a customer is exhibiting harm then they should be protected from harming themselves across all operators. Except, the main criteria for activating GamProtect seems to be that the customer has explicitly TOLD the operator that they do have a problem, that they are seeking #support for gambling, are #addicted to gambling, or that they want to stop ALL #gambling. Ok, we might say, given that scenario, this seems a reasonable response. A more cynical observer might suggest that this is simply one operator applying an "its my ball, if I can't play then no-one can" approach. With the ball in question being the revenues from a disordered customer. This is very much SCV-lite (Single Customer View), and represents the lowest hanging fruit in the 3 tier tree of scenarios looked at for a SCV to achieve (as examined in the ICO sandbox). It IS welcome, as it is better having it than not, but is does raise several questions. The end effect is very similar to signing up to GAMSTOP. So why was it felt necessary to invent a new data controller to collect and distribute information rather than simply using GamStop. This seems to create duplication in the operator's need to check customer details against an "exclusion" database. I am slightly unsure what is meant by the term "health related problem gambling" as this seems to involve a qualifier ("health related") which seems superfluous. Does this mean that a "non-health related" instance of "problem gambling" could exist which would not necessarily activate GamProtect? It is also a "horse has bolted - shut the stable door" scenario. The customer has indicated they wish to leave, but why weren't signs leading up to this self-admission not spotted and acted upon? The biggest ISSUE I have with GamProtect is that this "solution" does NOT create a SCV which allows harmful behaviours to be spotted across ALL operators and accounts. It still relies on customer led interaction with a single operator rather than insights drawn from customer activity across all operators. The biggest QUESTION I have is will the operators commit to extending GamProtect to customers who have NOT asked to close their accounts BUT whose behaviours do indicate harmful activity - such as if new Financial Vulnerability and Risk Assessment checks indicate presence of indicators suggesting serious financial stress? Answers to that one, Tim Miller, Grainne Hurst ???
