The future of the cyber workforce is going to be comprised of the students of today—those who are curious about information security, working across silos, and public safety. "Communities currently underrepresented in the cyber workforce have not been empowered to join this vital and ever-evolving digital workforce or they simply have not always envisioned themselves in holding jobs in cyber. Today is the end of most of my customers' fiscal year and my personal (and my fellow sales professionals in SLED's) conference season. I had 10 different shows/events in the last 8 weeks talking with customers and partners responsible for protecting the data of everyone in NY: from the smallest K12, to the entire State of NY and Universities whose students cross state lines after?graduation?and complicate reporting! I am not smart enough to calculate how many people are needed in the field of cybersecurity. What I do know is that we need more people, not just us as in Microsoft but for partners and customers as well. We also need more diversity in this field, and when I talk about diversity in this context it is not just about getting more women into the field, it is also about that! Diversity in this context is about including people with different backgrounds and not just the stereotypical hooded geek that loves coke and pizza. There are so many facets to cybersecurity where we could benefit from people who are new in career, lawyers, auditors, teachers, nurses, designers, journalists, firefighters etc. the list is basically endless. So to help more people get into the field of cybersecurity, however you define it, I have joined forces with colleagues and partners across the board to help out. On December 2nd 13:30-17:00 at Microsoft Denmark we will host an event for people who are either new in career or want a career in cybersecurity. Major news that Paul Nakasone, the former head of US Cyber Command, will lead an institute at Vanderbilt University. We need more instances where practitioners get included in universities - true interdisciplinarity. Retired four-star general and former U.S. Cyber Command and NSA chief Paul Nakasone is set to lead Vanderbilt University's newly established Institute for National Defense and Global Security. “One of the things that really attracted me to Vanderbilt was the fact that it has a very strong belief in an interdisciplinary approach," he said. The institute, set to launch this fall, evolved from Nakasone's involvement in Vanderbilt’s annual Summit on Modern Conflict and Emerging Threats. “We had conversations about it initially, about whether this particular approach made sense. We love working with him. So, we started talking about it … Then gelled into an idea for how these things can reinforce each other," said Chancellor Daniel Diermeier. Nakasone brings to the institute his unparalleled experience in navigating complex challenges. “The only way that we were able to have success against all of those threats was the fact that we had a broad partnership with a number of different players — academia and industry and our interagency allies,” he noted. The new hub will “drive outcomes” and focus on recruiting fellows who can contribute significantly. This is the perfect way to integrate genuine practitioners into a university environment, providing tailored, high-impact learning opportunities for students and ensuring that universities are focused on producing relevant research.
