?? Mapping 7,730 preschools across three cities in LATAM, we uncover critical gaps in access to early childhood education. Our groundbreaking effort spans Santiago (Chile), Bogotá (Colombia), and Santo Domingo (Dominican Republic), where we’ve identified thousands of preschools—many of which were previously unrecorded in public databases. ? 23% of preschools discovered in Santo Domingo were completely new. In Bogotá ? 21% of the preschools found were not in existing public records. ? In Santiago, we mapped over 1,583 preschools, with 36% missing from prior data. ?? Why does this matter? Early childhood education lays the foundation for lifelong learning. By identifying these critical gaps, we aim to address barriers families face in accessing quality education for their children. ?? This initiative is powered by research excellence and global partnerships with Yale University and J-PAL, ensuring rigorous data collection and analysis that drives meaningful impact. This is just the beginning. As we process more data and expand our efforts, we are committed to reshaping early childhood education in Latin America. ??

Today marks the first-ever International Day of Play! Play is crucial for early childhood care and education, providing a strong foundation for lifelong learning. Play isn't just fun; it's a universal language that helps children build relationships, develop resilience, and overcome challenges. By integrating play into education, we enhance cognitive, social, and emotional skills, ensuring that children thrive in a rapidly changing world. Currently, 83% of children in countries with free pre-primary education are developmentally on track, compared to 66.6% in countries without this provision. This highlights the importance of investing in early childhood care and education (ECCE) to ensure equitable opportunities for all children. UNESCO, alongside partners, is committed to promoting play-based learning and advocating for increased investment in ECCE. The Tashkent Declaration from the 2022 World Conference on Early Childhood Care and Education calls for governments to allocate at least 10% of their education expenditures to pre-primary education. To learn more, stay tuned for the launch of the Global Report on Early Childhood Care and Education on 17 June. Let’s acknowledge the power of play and work towards a future where every child can learn, grow, and reach their full potential! ?????? https://shorturl.at/S8HUD

A new report from the National Institute for Early Education Research (NIEER) highlights accomplishments in Massachusetts preschool access, but also showcases that there is still much work to be done.? As the State of Preschool Report notes, through our community collaborations between public school programs and private child care centers, we are working on solutions. Highlights:? ?? Gov. Maura Healey's Gateway to Pre-K initiative, which plans to distribute roughly $39 million between the state's 26 "Gateway" cities and towns to help expand free and low-cost preschool to 4-year-olds by the end of 2026. ?? The state’s Commonwealth Preschool Partnership Initiative, a preschool expansion grant program launched in 2020, is helping more communities stretch their free preschool programs to full 6-hour days. It is the first-ever #InternationalDayOfPlay! ?? There has been a lot of talk about the importance of using play-based learning in schools, but did you know that play-based learning is also being integrated into non-formal education environments? Education.org's evidence synthesis on Accelerated Education Programmes (AEPs) identified examples of play-based instruction being used to support out-of-school-children and youth to catch-up and advance their learning in Uganda, Pakistan, and the Philippines. Find links to some brilliant examples in our comments. #TransformingEducation #SDG4

When considering the issue of early childhood education, we know that there are three big roadblocks to universal preschool: lack of facilities, lack of spots available, and the?workforce gap. While we’ve spent a lot of time and resources over the years addressing the lack of facilities and lack of spots, we had yet to dive into the workforce gap problem until recently. Understanding the workforce gap and creating a plan around addressing this problem is a priority identified through our recent strategic planning process. Before jumping to solutions, we conducted a landscape analysis in order to first understand what the main problems are, who’s doing what, where the?gaps are, and what could SVP be doing to potentially address some of these gaps. Tiffany Hsieh, an SVP Partner, took on this task. As she put it,?"Conducting this landscape scan has been helpful to have a centralized resource for SVP Partners (including myself) to orient ourselves to all the stakeholders and work being done around expanding the early childhood workforce in Multnomah and Washington Counties and identify where SVP can play a unique role. Finding ways to get more early childhood educators into classrooms is such a central component to accomplishing our goal of expanding equitable access to early childhood education for all kids." Last week, Tia Henteleff highlighted a research study during her ISACS session that I first received from a friend/mentor/professor I had during my master’s program at U of M. Having worked closely with Porter-Leath Head Start in Memphis, this topic is particularly meaningful to me, for a lot of reasons. Dale Farran's decade-long study of pre-k programs in Tennessee reveals surprising findings: while pre-k attendees initially show better readiness, they face more challenges by sixth grade. This research urges us to rethink early education, especially for low-income families. Instead of emphasizing basic skills through structured learning, Farran advocates for play-based methods that higher-income families often prefer. These approaches may lead to better long-term outcomes by fostering creativity and critical thinking. This emphasized the need for flexibility in teaching and questioned the assumption that standard teacher certifications ensure quality. It's a call to action for educators and policymakers to innovate and adapt. Let’s continue discussing how to implement these insights for more effective and inclusive early education systems.?

In a new report with Trust for Learning, senior fellow Halley Potter details the ways that combining public and private funding sources can be an intentional strategy for creating diverse, affordable learning environments for children. Early childhood education is the most segregated level of education in the U.S., but these reports shed light on models reversing this trend.

We are excited to share our updated resource on early childhood education (ECE) for children aged 3 to 6—a critical pillar of Early Childhood Development. High quality ECE lays the foundation for lifelong learning, social development, and well-being. Evidence highlights that school readiness begins long before primary school, making equitable access to pre-primary education essential for reducing disparities and driving long-term economic growth. Over half of the world’s pre-primary-aged children lack access to ECE, with vulnerable populations being the most affected. Developed in collaboration with our partners, ECDAN's updated Knowledge Gateway on ECE explores evidence, guidelines, and practical insights to drive the scaling and sustainability of ECE initiatives. Together, we can ensure every child has the opportunity to thrive! ?? Check out the new resource here: https://lnkd.in/eAyu_BQn #EarlyChildhoodDevelopment #EducationForAll #SDG4 #KnowledgeGateway
