In this episode, Christina talks with Star Ngei, a maker/hacker who helps raise awareness of Global South technology and innovation through the NGO Global Innovation Gathering (GIG), which hosts a network of makers and makerspaces throughout the Global South. Although it’s hard to generalize across a space as culturally, politically, economically, and geographically diverse as the Global South, Christina and Star discuss how the access of people in the Global South to tech is limited compared to that of people in the Global North and so they have a more creative, non-linear approach to technology. They’re far more open to modifying a piece (or pieces) of technology to fit their specific needs, rather than just using it as it comes out of the box and merely specifically for its intended use. Christina and Star also talk about climate change and what the Global North can learn from the Global South in terms of dealing with it. Lastly, they talk about building community and how, if you’re interested in working to decrease global inequality by helping people in the Global South, the best place to start is by striking up a relationship with a community there first. Unless you want your efforts to be a waste of your time, their time, and resources, don’t just give a group of people in the Global South what you think they need, find out what they think they would find useful. #solarpunk #solarpunkPresentsPodcast #innovation #GlobalInnovationGroup #technology #hackingTechnology #GlobalSouth #TechnologyInTheGlobalSouth #MakerSpaces

Collaboration is critical to mobilize support for regenerative farming. Earlier this summer, Regen10 and other food system organizations joined a session with 1000 Landscapes For 1 Billion People to discuss their next phase of work. ? With 1000 Landscapes, Regen10 are exploring how to scale up grassroots-level partnerships as key drivers of the regenerative food systems transition. We're working on a joint report, building on the Landscapes Discussion Brief published last year. ? To read last year’s brief, press the link in the comments: ? #Regen10 #FoodSystems?
What does radical collaboration look like? For 1000L, radical collaboration means making space to co-create, reimagine, plan, and build the initiative's future together. Earlier this summer, representatives from partner and collaborator organizations?Commonland,?Rainforest Alliance,?Regen10,?Systemiq Ltd., Tech Matters, Heifer International, and CGIAR came together to explore what the next phase of the 1000L partnership will look like, from mobilizing funding for landscape leaders to developing new governance models for networks within the initiative. Read more about the workshop and participants' key takeaways here: https://lnkd.in/e2nxVmR5 A big thank you to our stellar facilitators from Bounce Beyond for guiding us through many of the sessions! #collaboration #1000L #radicalchange #systemschange #landscapeleaders #thinklandscape

Rockstar panel this morning at Battelle's Innovations in Climate Resilience Conference, featuring Tailwind's co-founder Katie MacDonald, ISeeChange's founder and CEO Julia Kumari Drapkin, Streetlife Ventures's co-founder Sonam Velani and Kettle's new head of partnership Alex Laplaza. Key takeaways ?? ???? We need more hard tech innovation in adaptation and resilience: There are some physical solutions that are starting to be deployed, like BurnBot, Inc. wildfire management robots, but we need more of them. ???? Last mile delivery is critical! Researchers, scientists and innovators need to develop their product with the end customers in mind, and work with frontline communities for most impact. ???? Pick you source of financing carefully: Venture Capital is the most expensive type of financing, compared to grants and other non-dilutive awards. There are many federal programs to support climate-related R&D right now, lean on those as much as possible. ???? Other ways government can help: make procurement easier and more accessible, give access to testbed for new technologies in real-life settings, point researchers towards the greatest needs for innovation. ???? Don't let the better be the enemy of the good: data may not be perfect, but it can already help save life. Share findings early and often, start deploying measures that can help protect residents from extreme heat, floods and other climate hazards. Much remains to be done, but it was exciting to hear from thought-leaders in the field about their work! ??

The Drop 2024, what a conference ???? I met so many great people, had lots of thoughtful conversations and experienced a community of founders and VC’s alike who are on the same mission to a cleaner planet through innovation and technology. ?? It was great to represent GRYD and share our recent successes and forward challenges. One of the things that stood out is the issue of unlocking capital for deployment of technologies solving climate challenges at scale. ?? Funding the development of cutting edge technologies is one thing but if we can’t apply them at scale then what is it for? Traditional financing methods are tricky for innovative new solutions because of ‘first project’ risk. The climate capital ripple brought to light many alternative financing options making it easier for companies like ours to scale quicker and in turn make significant impact. Thanks to the organisers, Pale blue dot and Domino Studio and thanks to Hampus Jakobsson for the recommendation to attend. Looking forward to next years Drop ??
