We’re still reeling from last week from Secretary Deb Haaland visit to our Acoma program. This visit was a part of the American Climate Corps Fall Tour supported by the Indian Youth Service Corps (IYSC) This initiative will be supported for years to come with a commitment of $15 million to strengthen the IYSC program and other corps programs for underserved communities. Secretary Haaland announced a $480,000 grant for the Acoma Traditional Farm Corps. This funding will further support our offices in Pueblo of Isleta and Pueblo of Zuni to establishing their own Farm Corps programs. Pueblo of Acoma Traditional Farm Corps - The Traditional Farm Corps program ALCC has run in Acoma since 2011, working to revive agricultural knowledge, practices, seed, and cultural perspective while working with local young people and providing healthy food for the community. Key aspects of the program include: ? Tribal Food Sovereignty ? Community Health ? Outdoor recreation (Hiking Club) ? Cultural Reconnection It was an honor to host Secretary Haaland in showcasing the incredible work of the Acoma Traditional Farm Corps. The day was filled with wholesome moments like harvesting a variety of traditional foods from the hoophouse with ALCC participants alongside our special guests from the local senior center. It is a huge blessing to celebrate and most importantly continuing the vital work ahead. After sharing a meal and making connections we concluded the day with a tour of Old Acoma. Thank you to everyone involved in this extraordinary day. #ClimateCorps #TribalFoodSovereignty #SecretaryHaaland #PuebloOfAcoma #AcomaTradition #IndigenousYouth #CulturalReconnection #OutdoorRecreation #CommunityHealth #AgriculturalRevival U.S. Department of the Interior
