When you hear the word sail, is a rotating cylinder the first thing that springs to mind? And yet rotating cylinders, or Flettner rotors, have been used to propel ships for almost exactly a hundred years. The cylinders have to be rotating to begin with, so you need another source of power as well, but once they are rotating, they will act like sails. This is because one side of the cylinder rotates in the same direction that the air flows, which accelerates the air close to that cylinder side. The other side of the cylinder rotates in the opposite direction to the air flow, which decelerates the air in that area. A velocity difference means a pressure difference. As readers of my recent posts will know, pressure difference on opposite sides of a foil (a wing or a sail, here the cylinder is the foil) equals lift. Lift in a vertically positioned foil equals forward propulsion. Voila! We are sailing. ANEMOI have been at the forefront of deploying rotor sails on cargo ships like the one in the video below. (It's worth watching the video to see their rotor sails fold down on the deck. Really cool. They have patented the raising and lowering mechanism, too.) Modern wind-assisted cargo ships do not rely on windpower alone and typically use fossil fuel engines as well, but the fuel savings provided by the sails are significant. According to ANEMOI, their rotor sails provide a 5 - 30% reduction in fuel and emissions. With the shipping industry currently causing 2 - 3 % of global greenhouse emissions, this is a significant positive difference. And a positive difference is exactly what we need to get to net zero.
