Before taking off, I did some research on tipping while travelling in and around the Motherland for the first time. Tipping culture around the world is controversial mainly because it can perpetuate wage disparities and place the burden of fair compensation on customers instead of employers. It often leads to inconsistent income for workers and can reinforce power imbalances, relying on subjective customer discretion rather than fair, standardized wages. Tipping in Tanzania is appreciated but not mandatory. For good service, I consider tipping 8-10% in restaurants. Safari guides and porters usually receive $10-20 per day. More on this later… Small tips for hotel staff, airport attendants, and taxi drivers are welcome. Remember, even small gestures are valued and show appreciation for their service. A genuine thank you, fist bump, or shoutout go a long way! After all, trips in 2024 aren’t cheap and shillings don’t grow on trees in Tanzania either. I recently caught up with CS Rebecca Miano,EGH (Cabinet Secretary for the Ministry of Tourism & Wildlife) at the Nairobi Safari Walk to discuss the role of tourism in Kenya's economy but I had to ask my famous question... ? "When you were first starting your career, what did you spend your first paycheck on?" ? The Honorable CS explained how she was scammed 400 Shillings to purchase a watch which she never received. After waiting for hours and spending the whole day hoping the thief would return with her watch, she decided from that moment forward to be an "ardent time keeper." The ability to manage time effectively and efficiently is necessary as many of the top minds that I meet stress this point. You always hear, "time is your most valuable asset," and when you are young it is easy to think that it is as unlimited as the sunlight. However, I have come to learn that time is never on your side - hence, why you should make every moment count whether its personal or professional.
