Each month I write a column so I can share with you the inside story of something significant going on at MPR|APM. I am excited about this month’s Dialed In column https://lnkd.in/gN2h5rRP. It features an effort that grew out of the Bill Kling Innovation Fund. MPR reporter Catharine Richert proposed the idea and we launched it in February in partnership with the University of Minnesota’s Bill Doherty and the non-profit Braver Angels. ? We are Talking Sense and encouraging everyone to hold better conversations with one another across our divides. MPR News and Braver Angels share a common goal: to foster meaningful connection and conversation among Minnesotans who differ politically. We believe a diversity of perspectives enriches our communities and that civic engagement strengthens our country. ? Talking Sense includes topics that can be hard: COVID-19, climate change, policing, abortion, and elections. We’re offering useful tools and tips and holding events around the state where you can join us to meet your neighbors and practice new ways to hold better conversations. ? We want to hear from you! Is political division affecting your community? What issues are coming between you, your friends, family, and neighbors? You can tell us your Talking Sense story (link https://lnkd.in/gG-gHnZc). ? If you are an MPR member, you already receive an email about my monthly column. If you are not currently a member, please consider becoming one so you will receive every edition of this column. And if you like what you read, please consider sharing with your networks ? ? #BraverAngels #TalkingSense #leadership #Connecting #Community

Last week’s election results landed with an unusual weight, even here in my reliably progressive city. The community I've always seen as united around shared ideals felt a bit fractured—and it reminded me of something so many arts and cultural nonprofits face every day. Working in the nonprofit world, especially in arts and culture, requires balancing creativity with deep community understanding. Yet even the best campaigns sometimes struggle to reach all audiences or bridge deeply rooted divides. The election was a reminder that even a seemingly unified community can contain a patchwork of perspectives, opinions, and sometimes contradictions. For many of you leading marketing for nonprofit organizations, it’s a familiar scene: what you believe resonates widely… might actually land differently depending on the audience, the timing, or even current events. So, as I sat with this feeling, I realized there’s a metaphor here for nonprofits facing the challenge of creating marketing messages that both inspire and unify. Like an election cycle, marketing is ultimately about listening. It’s about creating messaging that doesn’t just speak to values—but that’s tuned in enough to understand how those values are perceived across diverse supporters and stakeholders. When we feel this tension, the path forward isn’t to amplify our voices louder but to listen even more closely. To reach people effectively in today’s polarized climate, our campaigns need to be flexible and adaptive to different interpretations while holding onto core values. Here’s my takeaway for nonprofits navigating this: rather than lean only on what we’ve always done, we need to develop a fresh approach that’s centered around empathy, curiosity, and inclusivity. By approaching marketing with this intentional flexibility, nonprofits can inspire connection and create movements that transcend the noise of today’s divided discourse. Now’s the time to rethink, reimagine, and realign. Let’s keep pushing for a better, brighter, and more connected future. #nonprofitmarketing #artsandculture #communityengagement #adaptivemarketing #humancentereddesign #nonprofitinnovation?

Join Us as a Sponsor for Activists and Agitators 2024! ?? At YWCA Columbus, we are driven by our mission to eliminate racism and uphold peace, freedom, justice, and dignity for all. As part of this mission, we believe that every eligible voter deserves access to the ballot and the power to shape the future of our democracy—especially those who have historically been denied that right. On October 3, 2024, we’ll host the 7th annual Activists and Agitators event, focusing on the true history and current realities of American democracy, voter disenfranchisement, and the ongoing fight for fair representation. With Ohio's voter registration deadline just days away, this event will not only engage our community in meaningful conversations but also ensure attendees are registered and ready to #vote. This is where YOU come in. As the need for our services continues to grow, so does the cost of providing them. The people we serve face enormous barriers to securing basic necessities like housing and childcare. Did you know that #Columbus has the fastest-growing population of people experiencing homelessness among its peer cities? Or that the cost of living here far outpaces minimum wage, with affordable housing becoming a distant dream for so many? YWCA Columbus' work—providing meals, shelter, and community to families in emergency shelter—has become even more challenging amid record inflation and the end of pandemic aid. But with your #support as an event sponsor, we can continue to stand by the most vulnerable members of our community and build a more equitable future for all. By sponsoring Activists and Agitators, you're not just supporting an event—you’re investing in a vision for a more just society. Together, we can turn that vision into reality. Partnering with YWCA Columbus makes a tangible impact. Let’s work together until justice just is. ?? #YWCACbus #OnAMission #Sponsor
