“Under his plan, Education programs would be spread across the departments of Interior, Treasury, Health and Human Services, Labor and State. Initiatives supporting Native Americans would go to Interior, various loan and the Pell Grant programs would transfer to Treasury, programs supporting special education and disabled children would move to HHS, efforts to fund vocational and career programs would shift to Labor and the Fulbright-Hays Program would fall under State. Not all of Education would receive a reassignment: programs involving teacher preparation, initiatives for economically disadvantaged students, work-study and many others do not appear to receive a home under the bill. “ The article goes on to state that threats to dismantle the Department of Education began with Ronald Reagan. Higher education is not discussed. Higher education and student affairs administrators should become familiar with how higher education is governed in their states.

Every student in Oregon should have access to higher education. Our research with Oregon’s Higher Education Coordinating Commission (HECC) on the #OregonPromise #FinancialAid program led Oregon legislators to lower the GPA cutoff, remove the program’s co-pay, and increase the minimum award. These changes expand access, especially for male students, students of color, low-income students, and those receiving special education services. #EquitableEducation Read about here: https://bit.ly/3U36ErD
