As we approach our first job fair of the semester, it's important to be well-prepared to make the most of the event. Here are some key tips on what to expect and how to get ready: ? Dress professionally for the job fair, similar to how you would for an interview. Comfortable shoes are recommended, as this event involves a lot of standing and walking. ? Bring several copies of your resume, a professional folder with paper, and pens. ? Research the companies attending the fair and prioritize who you would like visit. ? Develop and practice a brief, 20 second "self-marketing" pitch. ? Prepare and ask insightful questions about job duties with the company but avoid asking questions related to salary and benefits as this is your initial contact. ? Thank the employer for their time and ask for a business card. You can follow-up your meeting with a thank you note or a call. I went to job fair last week. Yes I hate job fair yes I find them a waste of time and I am sorry for this. Every time I go to a job fair I regret it. This job fair was 5 booth unfortunately most of the hiring mangers did not show up. The lady in charge of this event advised to go to the stores and drop off thier resume in person. I informed her that because I knew about this job fair from last week I already conducted that unfortunately have not heard back. She asked me once more wait you went last week and applied in person I said yes. Her try agian me yes of course I will try agian. Plus I printed so many resume even do knowing most will state to apply online. Before the job fair I was seating down on a bench.This man comes sits beside me. He is very nervous stressed out. Looks at me and says I don't know if I have it in me to apply for another job I been unemployed for so long and I am tired. I looked at this man said you got to keep on trying don't give up.Then told him you got to see this as learning curve yes you will go through alot of interviews yes thier a chance you won't get that job. But don't let that discourage you you must see every interview as a learning opportunity. Every time you go to interview you learn new skills challenges every time you go you will learn something new. Take everything you learned from that interview put it towards the other interview so that one might be successful.

Las Vegas peeps: There is a sizeable Career Fair going on at the Boulevard Mall this September 18th. Over 60 employers representing over 10,000 jobs. Career fairs yield a low rate of return to the job seeker. Why? Because the job seeker doesn't go into the process with a targeted approach. They typically go into the career fair blind with no idea what jobs the employer is sourcing for, have a one size fits all resume and no captivating pitch. Message me or contact my company to work one-on-one with a recruiting advisor who will gain understanding of your employment goals, advise you on what companies to target and how to approach them, create you effective marketing and strategy for those companies and advise you what to do post the career fair. There is a lot of recon work we have to do now to hit a September 18th deadline.

I'm not teaching class today because the Career Fair at Michigan Technological University is such a big deal, we formalized it as a recess from classwork. But I'm always struck by the fact that large #environmental and #civil #engineering firms, nearly all of which have #culturalresources units or divisions, don't recruit for #CRM employees at this event. They don't collect resumes or interview young archaeologists, architectural historians, ethnographers, or historians of any type. I've asked about this at American Cultural Resources Association (ACRA) before. I understand why small and regional firms don't come here to recruit, but the big firms? Why is the hiring process so different for archaeological technicians and project supervisors in CRM vs. other fields in resources management, development, and planning? I keep hearing about how hard it is for companies to find and retain professionals in resource management jobs, but I don't see that the hiring process changed this year... Barr Engineering Co. Commonwealth Associates, Inc. Tetra Tech The Mannik & Smith Group, Inc. TRC Companies, Inc. US Army Corps of Engineers ECS Limited You are all here, but none of you listed "social sciences" or "anthropology" or "history" or any other allied major that could supply your company with these workers. Could it be a problem with the Career Soft Solutions Inc's #CareerFair+ website structure or design? I don't think so. It makes me wonder if these companies are serious about their cultural resources compliance units, their commitment to NEPA/NHPA, or the way that the cultural resource professionals within these companies assert their significance alongside their peers in other fields. —- Evening postscript. I’ve had some rants today. But the CRM sector is a $1,500,000,000 annual industry. Can’t we even get your co-workers at the giant firms to understand that these professions matter at their own companies?
