Is Austin, Texas the new climate tech startup hub in America? We may not be there yet, but we are poised for serious growth in 2025 and beyond. Last week I joined a group of Austin's brightest climate tech minds at Palm Venture Studios where we heard from James Gray who founded Austin-based Seren Labs to help investors make informed decisions by aggregating a wide array of data sources, from earnings calls, funding announcements and conferences, to media coverage, Slack channels and DOE grant awards in order to separate value signal from marketing noise and identify the companies that are doing real work and may need more funding. ?? In an ever growing and crowded space, this kind of granular data collection coupled with intelligence and insight layers is an obviously valuable tool in a VC's toolbox. ?? James said they are tracking over 70,000 signals and their roadmap will only add to that. Seren Lab's ability to map human networks at scale and understand who the key players are and what they are doing and saying is a game changer. ?? Seren Labs also seeks to enable greater geographical distribution of climate tech companies beyond the traditional Silicon Valley strongholds, where historically it could be a competitive disadvantage to build your company elsewhere. ?? Now, in a place like Texas where renewable energy is abundant and more companies are starting up, this presents an opportunity for funding and growth in a less saturated market. Opportunistic VCs are already moving in this direction and it's an exciting time for climate tech in Austin and Texas at large! ?? ?????? ???? ???? ???????? ?????? ??????????? Last night, I had the pleasure of attending Tenzin Choeyang's seminar about climate tech, VC, and global impact. One discussion was particularly salient: ?????? ???? ?????? ?????????????? ???????????????????????????? ???????? ??????????????????????????? The trillion dollar question. Arguably, the most fundamental question that we must answer before we can effectively tackle climate change. 1?? First, we have to start by challenging our assumptions. For example, there is a notion that investing in developing countries is not a fruitful investment. Or that ESG investments are unprofitable. However, this does not reflect reality. It is critical to keep an open mind and conduct proper diligence. 2?? Second, and these are my own thoughts, we have to challenge the assumptions we have about our assumptions. The underlying assumption is that we *must* make money while fighting climate change. What about simply breaking even? What about operating at a loss? If it were up to me, saving the planet comes before anything else. Stabilizing the environment for future generations, no matter the cost, should be considered a win. This is my "radical" position: the greatest ROI is ?????? increased profits, but rather a healthy Earth. Until a mass paradigm shift occurs, we have to operate within the constraints of our hypercapitalistic Western society. Tenzin understands this. Saving the world is not easy. Having to do it while ???????? maintaining profits is even harder. Tenzin is an environmental superstar who is helping to shape our climate reality under these tough conditions. When I chose to live in LA in 2022, it was to be closer to the ocean, desert and mountain ranges of the west. One of the first things I noticed when I got settled, however, was how drastically the impact of climate change could be seen everywhere I turned. Chronic smog, wildfires, record rain fall levels ... there was no escaping the realities of climate change and its effects on our most vulnerable communities and beautiful earth. I wasn't certain how, but I knew that I wanted my work going forward to encompass consulting in the climate tech sector. Fast forward 2 years, and I am thrilled to share that I will be consulting climate tech startups as part of Dream.Org and Village Capital's Dream Climate Tech Launchpad 2024 Advisory Board! This year's program will support Black and Latinx-led climate tech startups building solutions related to energy, the built environment, and electronic transportation and infrastructure. ?? Of those, 50 of them are best-positioned to get their technologies to deployment and scale by 2050, according to?a new report?by Congruent Ventures and Silicon Valley Bank. The focus of the report, according to Joshua Posamentier, one of the report’s authors and Congruent’s managing partner and co-founder, is on technologies that are either being deployed already or do not require major behavioral changes to be deployed." The Drop 2024, what a conference ???? I met so many great people, had lots of thoughtful conversations and experienced a community of founders and VC’s alike who are on the same mission to a cleaner planet through innovation and technology. ?? It was great to represent GRYD and share our recent successes and forward challenges. One of the things that stood out is the issue of unlocking capital for deployment of technologies solving climate challenges at scale. ?? Funding the development of cutting edge technologies is one thing but if we can’t apply them at scale then what is it for? Traditional financing methods are tricky for innovative new solutions because of ‘first project’ risk. The climate capital ripple brought to light many alternative financing options making it easier for companies like ours to scale quicker and in turn make significant impact. Thanks to the organisers, Pale blue dot and Domino Studio and thanks to Hampus Jakobsson for the recommendation to attend. Looking forward to next years Drop ??
