In recent years, terms like “patient outcomes” and “patient centricity” have become industry buzzwords, tossed around by healthcare companies as if they hold the key to revolutionizing care. The reality? These phrases have lost their meaning and value. Once grounded in genuine goals to improve healthcare, they are now often used as marketing tools—empty jargon that distracts from what’s really happening behind the scenes. Let’s be clear: these words are no longer about patients. They’ve become a mechanism to drive revenue growth and inflate stock prices. Companies boast about their “patient-centric” approach, but behind the scenes, it’s a business strategy. Investments in digital tools, clinical pathways, and health technologies are positioned as being “for the patient,” but the real goal is increasing margins and boosting shareholder value. These buzzwords are used to soothe the public into believing there’s a transformation underway, when in reality, it’s about extracting more profit. Let’s not forget that improving “patient outcomes” is often about metrics that benefit insurers, pharmaceutical companies, and hospital systems more than patients themselves. Length of stay, readmission rates, and cost per episode of care are measured, but what about the actual well-being of patients beyond those short-term metrics? The term “patient centricity” is just another tool to disguise the fact that healthcare is a business. These companies are not altruistic—they’re accountable to investors. The focus isn’t on the patient but on how to make the patient journey seem more streamlined so profits soar. Look at the wave of acquisitions in healthcare, from big pharma to hospitals, all under the guise of “improving patient outcomes.” It’s a smoke screen. True patient care would involve transparency, affordability, and real change. Instead, we’re sold on systems that are said to improve care but are designed to push the patient through as quickly as possible, making way for the next revenue-generating opportunity. It’s time to stop hiding behind these buzzwords and admit that they’ve been co-opted. It’s not about patients anymore—it’s about profits. This isn’t a critique of the healthcare professionals working within these systems. It’s about the corporate machinery that has turned healthcare into an investment portfolio, manipulating the narrative under the banner of patient outcomes and centricity.
