On October 23rd, Home Base proudly celebrated the grand opening of our 3rd Floor Trauma Suite expansion, including the Suffolk Construction Innovation Clinic and the Wounded Warrior Project Brain Health and Special Operations Performance Clinic.?This expansion enhances our ability to support Special Operations Forces with specialized care focused on brain health, resilience, and optimal performance. Guided by the SOF-ism that?“Humans are More Important than Hardware”?and committed to Strengthening Partnerships and Enabling the Joint Force to prevail, this expansion aligns with the?Comprehensive Strategy for Special Operations Forces Warfighter Brain Health?released by USSOCOM in September 2023. This strategy underscores the importance of monitoring brain health and cognitive performance, optimizing cognitive capacity, advancing brain health science, and connecting wounded, ill, and injured service members with essential treatment resources. Our innovative approach includes accelerated personalized TMS, advanced Bertec CDP/IVR, acupuncture, and managing pain and improving sleep, alongside collaborative research to improve the HealthSpan of our warriors. This expansion supports our strategic vision of enhancing resilience, extending performance, and ensuring the highest quality of specialized care for our service members and veterans. As we watch the new Ottawa Hospital being built, did you know that the site of the building, and its parking lot has, for years been a beautiful park, named for the Dutch girl who took refuge in Ottawa during the war and would go on to become Queen? That the land is contaminated and geologically unstable greatly increasing the cost of construction? That the mega parking lot will dominate the corner of the site and that there’s no good pedestrian connection to transit for the thousands of employees and visitors to patients? We had an opportunity to build the hospital at a site better served by transit, with better connections to roads, easier access for helicopters and that didn’t destroy a park or a heritage landscape. We (city leadership) insisted on changing professional recommendations; we could have insisted on a site that worked for everyone and didn’t. And don’t forget that the project recieved 1 bid; that 76% of hospitals in ON have been built by 2 firms in the last few decades, hollowing out competition and destroying creative talent through a self serving procurement model driven by IO.

IIGH, in collaboration with the KSOM Department of Population and Public Health Sciences, over the past year developed and adopted these Principles of Local and Global Engagement to guide all aspects of our research, education, and community programs. We collaborate with a broad range of civil society, academic, government, and UN partners, in the United States and around the world. We recognize our responsibility as an academic institution based in the global north to operate ethically and equitably within these partnerships. These eight principles form the backbone of how we seek to engage with partners worldwide and provide actionable guidance for our work. Aligned with international human rights norms, these principles emphasize respect for human rights as central to ethical and equitable engagement. Our commitment to justice, equity, diversity, inclusion, and accessibility is integrated into all areas of our work. Thriving in residential care. 1.6m people are struggling to get the care they need or any care at all. Of course people want to live in their own homes, but proper support and care can be essential, to thrive, at home or anywhere. Sadly, in pursuit of staying home, but cutting costs, for hundreds of thousands, that can mean a lonely life, imprisoned by 4 walls, and if any support is funded, (and that's increasingly less likely), it is often minimalistic, task based and addresses only the basic and most mundane tasks. We are perfectly capable of providing better, proper holistic and rounded support that supports a life worth living and, as the Eden Alternative, we work with providers who do exactly that brilliantly, but, it's less likely to be the case on council funded packages, especially when contractual visits are limited to 30 minutes or even 15. Then, for a number of people, living unassisted at home for the majority of time is just not a sensible option or a life of fulfillment. In fact, it may have become very challenging, highly stressful and / or unsafe. Then there are residential options. There are residential homes supporting everything, throughout 24hrs x 365 days. There are literally thousands of brilliant residential homes that deliver 'home' from home, (even if all you hear about is not that). It's perfectly possible, it does happen in thousands of places, even where they are funded by councils or the NHS. The Eden Alternative works with a number both working in people's home and in residential care (like my own homes) and through a validation process, see and hears an abundance of stories of achievement, fulfillment and loving companionship, that can help make later life, an amazing chapter in life. We just need to want to do that that as a society, find it, yet in large parts, we just don't bother, and, it starts with government and care commissioning , which is archaic, and why we have a mismatch, in so many things, which we just don't do very well. For large urban healthcare systems, effective master planning requires a holistic approach that accounts for the impact the campus will have on employment, business and real estate development. In this Insights piece, we use the examples of UPMC and The MetroHealth System (Cleveland, OH) to illustrate how our long-term campus master planning process supports and strengthens neighborhood connections, sustainability, resilience and economic impact. SFG is a collaborative statewide initiative dedicated to integrating research-based Protective Factors into services for families and children. During Fiscal Year 2023, SFG made significant progress by refreshing its strategic plan and evaluation efforts. The expansion efforts have resulted in 17 new partnerships, allowing SFG to extend the reach of the five Protective Factors through various family support programs. Through these initiatives and participation in key events, SFG continues to empower families and strengthen communities, creating a more resilient Georgia for future generations. Join the NYU Furman Center on October 9th for a panel discussion on the growing calls for state and local governments to play a more direct role in investing, financing, building, and owning new housing. As the housing crisis deepens and consensus builds around the need to increase supply, policymakers are evaluating the opportunities and risks of government-led housing development. Across the nation, mixed-income models are emerging that range from direct government involvement in development and ownership to public financing at varying risk levels. Each approach requires careful consideration of financial, regulatory, and operational risks, as well as the need to balance the existing affordable housing portfolio with long-term public benefit and sustainability. Experts in urban policy, housing finance, and public administration will explore the potential benefits and challenges of New York City and New York State taking a more active role in multifamily housing development, with a focus on mixed-income financing models that blend public and private investments.
