Ruthlessly exposed: how the law protects the war efforts of powerful states instead of vulnerable individuals - a commentary by ECCHR-Program Director Andreas Schueller on air warfare and lack of (legal) protection of civilians. Air warfare has long-lasting consequences for civilians. Insufficiently protected by existing law, left vulnerable by the legal prioritization of military tactics, and hardly compensated for their sacrifices, civilians suffer the most. Many recent examples of air warfare show the deadly consequences caused by powerful states. The asymmetry between those using air warfare and those exposed to it calls for a reorientation of the law as we know it. ?? https://lnkd.in/d8eih5uU

A country is better off conducting joint exercises for external defense among its armed services than having each armed service do exercises with its foreign counterpart. It is more reasonable to assume that it is the national armed services that have to work together when there is any external aggression. These services have to team up and work synergistically in order to defend their country. They have to test their joint doctrines and improve these accordingly. Inter-operability problems that go beyond commonality of equipment can be addressed. It is unrealistic to assume that foreign allies or counterpart foreign services would come at once to help. Neither is it sound to think that defense can be wholly taken cared of by one service alone, even with foreign counterpart assistance. The national joint headquarters and the area commands have the obligation to ensure adequate external defense and must plan for and hold joint exercises among their forces. A country would be better off if its armed services work effectively together rather than merely engaging in turf wars and one-upmanship

"In a conflict with China the United States would largely exhaust its munitions inventories in as few as three to four weeks, with some important munitions ... lasting only a few days. Once expended, replacing these munitions would take years." The exquisite will be exhausted rapidly; the next long war will be the domain of brilliant but basic systems and platforms that can be manufactured at scale, operated easily and repaired or replaced quickly. The Commission on the National Defense Strategy's report makes for a sobering but insightful long read (link in comments). Plenty of analysis and advice that is applicable to US allies and partners as well. #futurewar #preparedness #defenceindustry #longwar

The expiration date of arms may indeed play a role in the decisions made by the U.S.A. and its allies when it comes to engaging in armed conflict. While it is not the sole factor driving these decisions, the pressure to utilize and dispose of expiring stockpiles of arms cannot be dismissed. It be a troubling reality that highlights the complexities and ethical dilemmas surrounding the global arms trade and military action. As the world grapples with the implications of these issues, it is crucial to critically examine the motivations behind armed conflict and the potential influence of expiring arms stockpiles.

The implications for Australian defence equipment supplies in this analysis are profound. With the potential new front opened up in the Red Sea and broader Middle East Region, it is unfathomable that Australian defence production of critical capabilities is not already approaching wartime levels.
In this op-ed, the Cato Institute’s Eric Gomez argues the US won’t be able to support Ukraine and Taiwan with arms and defense articles indefinitely and that hard choices are on the horizon. https://ow.ly/JaYm1058CzP
