Early jail diversion, which refers to diversion efforts preceding formal arrest, offers a significant opportunity to reduce contact with the criminal justice system. By preventing recidivism, exacerbated mental health and substance abuse issues, and trauma associated with incarceration, early diversion can greatly benefit vulnerable populations. The Police, Treat, Community Collaborative identifies five pathways for early diversion, such as self-referral and active outreach. Effective collaboration between law enforcement and behavioral health agencies is essential. Julota’s cloud-based program ensures secure data sharing and compliance with all relevant laws, enhancing the effectiveness of early jail diversion efforts. Learn more about how Julota can support your community's response. ??????

This was the shower block at parrramatta jail. I remember running to line up hopeful the hot water wouldn’t run out before it was my turn. Having to shower in the open while 60+ men stood around watching eagerly waiting their turn. One of the many dehumanising experiences that result from incarceration. Understanding how to introduce humane practices into traumatic environments to increase instances of joy and hope is a different approach that will improve outcomes for people impacted by the criminal justice system. Lloyd Consulting Co takes a humane approach building on a foundation of safety first that supports people to become personal responsible. #changemakers #otherwordz #languagematters #diversityequityinclusion

Youth Worker | Board Chair | Trustee | Director | Youth Governance Advocate | Mana Whenua Representative
As the Youth Sector begins to find itself in a position of not being listened to by the current government, I sit here contemplating many of the words that have been said by so many people… The true need right now is Youth Voice to thrive across all areas of our Young People. Not every young person is going to speak up in a way that meets the requirements of politicians, Public Servants and others who constantly ask for Young People’s perspective. There are two critical needs for the Youth Voice Area: 1. We need to create a safe, For Youth, By Youth kaupapa that focuses on Youth Voice for all Young People, not just the High Achievers, and 2. We need proper education within our Central Government, Local Government and Private Sectors on how to engage, understand and truly hear the voices and opinions of our Young People. What are your thoughts?
“We are your future regardless of whether we’re in jail or not – we are still your future.” We need to be listening to young people when it comes to change that impacts them most. How incredibly brave of these rangatahi to share their experience and knowledge.

I have a passion for keeping our adolescents out of jail/detention: I recently spoke with a senior about this topic. She told me that placing these young people in jail would teach them hard lessons and make them better citizens. I shared my firm belief that there are alternatives. I gave her a copy of my new book, which includes lived experiences and researched data stating that the other options are better for our future and community safety. I shared four approaches that must be implemented soon: ** Community-based day treatment programs engaging youth and family ** Behavioural treatment interventions ** Group homes where treatment modalities address risk factors. ** Employ professional, trained staff. Read "END Incarceration" to increase your knowledge of what should be done before adolescents become involved with the justice system.

Local service shoutout! Have you heard of the Co-Responder Unit, or CRU? One of the main goals of CRU is to divert community members from unnecessary emergency room visits and jail. CRU is able to do this by triaging the behavioral health situation, connecting community members to the next best service, and following up within 48 hours with any additional support or services needed. This service decreases the backlog in emergency rooms or jail, and reduces repeat calls for service for our law enforcement officers. Learn more here: https://buff.ly/3T2vk1N
