It was a privilege to be invited by KPJ HEALTHCARE UNIVERSITY this evening to listen to Prof Nora Colton from UCL Global Business School for Health on Collective Leadership and Systems Thinking. Her insights into these critical areas have left me inspired and motivated to implement these concepts in our healthcare practices. Collective Leadership in healthcare emphasizes the importance of collaboration among various stakeholders—patients, providers, and policymakers. The success of major change implementation hinges on how it communicated and how it impacts individuals and processes in the organization. Stakeholders frequently resist change for many reasons, including not having enough information, fear of how the change will affect them, comfort with the status quo, and not understanding the benefits of the change. For change to truly be effective, a leader must know how to effectively communicate the benefits, minimize the barriers, and describe the processes. Gone are the days when quality is owned by a single department or measured on a distant dashboard. In an article published by Becker's Healthcare, Erica Carbajal writes about how clinical quality is "woven into the fabric of nearly every aspect of health system operations." She describes how efforts to integrate quality and safety into health care operations initially gained momentum in the 1990s, and have since been amplified by the passage of the Affordable Care Act in 2010.
