For the first time ever, experts anticipate that there will be more than 2 million cancer diagnoses in America in 2024. That’s 2 million times someone will hear the words, “you have cancer.” More than ever, we need Congress to increase funding for lifesaving cancer research. This research has already led to countless medical advancements, but we need to do more. We need more scientists in labs researching more new ways to prevent cancer, new ways to diagnose the disease in its earlier, more treatable stages, and more cures. “...who’s helping them?” Through our collaboration with Takeda Oncology, we published the 'Improving Health Equity in Lung Cancer' foundational paper, with the overarching takeaway being empathy. Laronica Conway is a perfect example of someone whose compassion and empathy for others make them a strong patient advocate.? From the foundational paper we hosted, 'Your Voice: Sparking Meaningful Change in Society' at GVCC 2023. Derived from insights shared by Non-Small Cell Lung Cancer (NSCLC) patients, care partners, and healthcare professionals like Laronica, the paper sheds light on their experiences. Laronica, driven by her personal journey as a care partner for her mother with stage four lung cancer in 2008, believes that "advocacy chose her." This experience heightened her compassion, fostering genuine care for others facing illness. Breast and cervical cancer screenings can detect cancer at its earliest, most treatable stages—and access to screenings saves lives. In April of this year, I’ll be celebrating FIFTEEN years of being healed from cancer. This is video #8 in a series of videos I’m recording to share my experience as a long-term survivor of a young adult cancer. I’m making these videos to promote awareness of the issues that cancer patients and survivors deal with, as well as to advocate for research in the area of long-term survivorship. In this video, I describe what the first stage of treatment for Hodgkin’s Lymphoma was like for me. My aim is to keep these videos relatively succinct, so in this video I focus on what took place rather than how I felt about it. In my next video I’ll describe the major hiccup that I encountered toward the end of my six months of chemotherapy treatment and how instrumental my mother was in saving my life.
