It's Community Manager Appreciation Day! A huge shout out to all my community nerd friends and colleagues. It's hard to truly understand the work and weight and exhaustion and fulfillment and joy and difficulty of the Community Manager role. When you nail it, people may not even notice. When you trip, everyone sees it. Increasingly, we all turn to communities of all sorts to get support for projects and hobbies, fix broken things, and seek advice and counsel. And keeping those communities running is very, very difficult in ways that most people just don't understand. Most everyone has the experiencing of hosting dinner or house parties. We know the difficulty of planning, organizing, preparing, and hosting. That one party can be absolutely exhausting. So imagine a job that has you hosting a years long party. With strangers. And anonymity. And massive numbers of people. And minimal budgets and resources. It's not easy. But it can be wickedly fulfilling. I still remember the day when I saw two grown men meeting each other for the first time in-person, nearly run towards each other, and embracing in a long joyful hug. I still remember the smiles on faces young and old as they connected about things that mattered to them with people who understand why. It's a wonderful career but it's not easy. And we all benefit from those folks standing on the front lines, ready to guard against trolls, hate, spam, and so much more. It's a thankless job but it's so important to a healthy, functioning online experience. There’s no ONE way to do community engagement, and there’s no one job title for a journalist who is also a community engagement practitioner. What’s the difference between an engagement editor and a producer? Or an engagement specialist? Or a reporter? What do any of these things mean? This “community engagement industry” is in its early stages, and is just beginning to define these jobs. That's good, right? Because you have a lot of freedom to define things yourself. It can also be overwhelming. Instead of starting with the job title, ask yourself: What do you need this person to do?

What it feels like a Community Manager??? Being a community manager is like setting out on an exciting journey where every day offers fresh opportunities, victories, and relationships. ?? Although it may appear to be as simple as arranging events or monitoring online discussions, people in this position are aware that it involves much more. It all comes down to creating a dynamic, welcoming digital environment where each and every voice matters. It's about fostering involvement, fostering relationships, and fostering a sense of belonging among individuals who are varied. You wear multiple hats as a community manager: you're part cheerleader, part diplomat, and part problem solver. You serve as the link between the brand and the community, making sure that everyone feels heard and encouraged. It requires striking a balance between strategy and creativity, sensitivity and planning. Even so, there's an indisputable sense of satisfaction that comes from watching a community grow—watching its members create deep bonds, encourage one another through difficulties, and share in successes. There is an undeniable energy that comes from being at the center of something special—a community that isn't simply a collection of people but a close-knit family brought together by common interests and aspirations. Sure, there are late nights and unforeseen obstacles. Handling a community can be a roller coaster sometimes. I’ve heard sayings like this a lot before I came into the space. I didn’t totally get it until I became a community manager myself and started handling one. Humans, they say, are hard to control, but that’s not the hardest part of handling a community. Trust me. One thing I’ve learned is that keeping people engaged consistently is the real challenge. It’s not just about having them join the community but finding ways to maintain their interest, especially when there’s no immediate incentive or reward. Balancing different personalities, managing conflicts, and creating meaningful conversations takes time and patience. But when you see the community come together, contribute, and grow, it’s incredibly rewarding. So what am I saying? Handling a community can be hard, it can come with different challenges. But when you get the community together, especially when you get them to develop interest in the brand’s product. It will become easy. So to all my community managers out there.
