The Strengthened Aged Care Standard 6, puts a greater focus on resident input into the food and drink they receive in residential aged care. Growing up, my mom would make the BEST blackberry pies ?? Freshly picked blackberries, a savory doughy crust rolled out from scratch, topped with a dollop of vanilla icecream ?? She's ruined pie for me. As in, I'm now so conditioned *cough* alright, downright spoiled, and am a harsh critic whenever pie is presented to me. And the pie COULD turn out perfectly edible. Today, I’m visiting my friend at The Cromwell Hospital, London, and I’m looking forward to a delicious lunch of Lebanese mezze, chocolate creameux, and afternoon cream tea, all made fresh in-house and enjoyed in her room. It’s a reminder of how good food can lift the spirits and support recovery. But it also highlights a glaring issue around the appalling food quality in most of our NHS hospitals, which hinders healing rather than supporting it. When my dad was in hospital, he used to say that if every patient contributed just £1 per day towards their meals, we could build a fund to transform hospital food. With the government asking for input on how we can improve the NHS, this is an idea I’m passionate about putting forward. But I don’t want to stop there! I’d love to see nutrient-dense, freshly prepared food available for our doctors and nurses too, accessible 24/7 in vending machines to support their energy and wellbeing on those long shifts. Fascinating discussion stemming from this post, about food, meals, choice, quality in #AgedCare I think it’s important to focus on the plates where residents have little or no speech (need support to choose or complain), need mealtime assistance (support to eat), and need IDDSI level 4 or 5 (puréed or minced & moist) foods. Those are the groups I am looking for in the show .

Food - Aged Care - Maggie Beer Disappointing to see the negative portrayal of aged care by Maggie Beer & Australian Broadcasting Corporation (ABC) and Anika Wells Sorry this was a disappointing program and undersells some of the good work the Maggie Beer Foundation does The program lacked science and failed to acknowledge the impact that chronic illness and a lifetime of poor eating & lifestyle choices has on older people’s nutritional status - all long before they come to residential aged care Sadly the program failed to acknowledge the great food and dining environment in many of aged care homes. Aged care has a lot to be proud of! Yes some need to improve - however let’s acknowledge the good! This is a lunch I recently had in an aged care home - yes a home I am a director of - and yes it was the same meal served to the residents - and yes it was as good as it looked !

A red alert! Watch what you eat! On this faithful day, a man rushed into the nurse's station holding his tummy and shouting, Nurse! Nurse! Please help me o! My first intervention was to ask him what was wrong, what he ate, if he had been passing watery stool and vomiting, and when everything started. It's been about 5 months since I have been working in this facility, and I have observed that in a week I treat at least 2 patients with gastroenteritis (diarrhoea). From what I gathered, most of the workers eat out, a lot of them buy fruits and eat immediately without washing, while others take unhealthy foods, junks claiming they have no time to cook their foods at home. All over the world, people are seriously affected every day by diseases caused by consuming unhygienic and unsafe food.?? Consuming unhygienic food can cause serious medical conditions like diarrhoea that can lead to hospital admission and affect productivity at work. WHAT ARE THE STEPS TO TAKE TO ENSURE YOU ARE EATING SAFE ??Take your food hygiene seriously. ??Be very mindful of where you buy food and where you consume it. ??Fruits are good but should be washed thoroughly before consumption. (Do not joke with this, it can cost you some money from your hard-earned salary.) Instead, buy a sachet of water and wash your fruits before eating. ??Wash your hands thoroughly with soap and water after work before cooking or when about to eat outside. ??Avoid exposing food, instead, serve and eat your food when you are ready to avoid contamination. ??Create time to make your own food if you are chanced or employ a helper. ??Sterilize your warmer once or twice a week with hot water. All these steps will help you maintain a healthy state and prevent discomfort (diseases), which will in turn improve your productivity at work. I hope you find this post helpful. Have a great day!??
