In California and the United States, #FFNcare is the most common nonparental #ChildCare arrangement for young children, including #infants and #toddlers–nearly two out of every five children, ages 3 and under, are entrusted to the care of an FFN provider. ?? Yet FFN providers receive low or no compensation for their work. #ChildCareSubsidies are a critical way for FFNs to increase their income, but currently, many face barriers to accessing this system. Early Edge California, Catholic Charities of Santa Clara County, San Jose Public Library, and Vision y Compromiso have released a NEW policy brief exploring the barriers to subsidies and provides recommendations on how to better support FFN caregivers in obtaining them. There's been more and more talk online, about the Welsh Government plans to "eliminate profit from children's care". As noble as that may sound, is it actually going to improve the most important thing?...the quality of care. With over 200 privately run homes across Wales; some with amazing facilities and even on-site schools, the move to a different model in April of 2027 sounds more like a "pie in the sky" idea. As much as it would be nice to have a social care system, run by the state, that could provide the same level of care to the children and young people most in need, with just 37 council run services...it doesn't sound like a sensible plan. The time scale is also cutting it fine. April 2027 is almost exactly 3 years away. Not very long in organisational terms. I know of amazing privately run services, lead and staffed by some of the most caring and compassionate individuals in the sector, across both regulated and unregulated homes. And yes, I'm biased towards charities because the third sector is my background...but I also recognise the incredible work done by small independent homes and some of the bigger organisations who do things that no council run facility has the budget for. I don't usually sit on the fence ("hold strong opinions and hold them loosely" is my default state)...but I'm really not sure about all this. It’s Women’s Month and The Well has a new campaign for monthly donors- “Drop in The Bucket”?????? https://lnkd.in/gWt8fk2N The Well’s mission is to create a safe place of belonging where women find support, encouragement, and resources- all while their children grow alongside them a window away. The Well provides co-working space with childcare, special events, workshops, classes, kids’ programming, and service projects for families. Their desire is to be able to offer these amazing programs to all women, no matter their level of income. Because of this dream, The Well depends on the donations to help support the women and children they desperately want to extend services to. They are also trying to keep costs affordable because? one of the largest hurdles in this world is the exploding cost of childcare. Women are exiting the workforce in record number, and we believe The Well is the answer to this nationwide crisis. We believe that even the smallest act of kindness can create ripples of hope and change in the lives of these women. It’s a reminder that no contribution is too small and that every “drop in a bucket” adds up. Consider donating small monthly amounts that together can fill our bucket! Such a great source of information! Every school should have a garden. Children need to understand how food is cultivated. If they understand the care, patience, time, and effort it takes to grow food they are more inclined to try fruits and veggies and add them to their regular diets. They are also more likely to appreciate fresh-grown foods, which can lead to a decrease in food waste in their homes. What are we waiting for? Let's start planting!

Investing in childcare is a two-for-one win. Not only can it support the wellbeing and employment prospects of parents, but good-quality childcare also supports the development of children. That's why we need a universal childcare guarantee so no child is left behind. Alongside an increase in the 3-4 year old funding rate and a workforce strategy, the Government needs to amend childcare eligibility rules to include those groups who are currently excluded from the offer. Namely, single parents living with a disability and single parent carers; parents in training or education, and parents with No Recourse to Public Funds. Countries from Estonia to Ireland and from France to Canada have reformed their childcare systems in recent years. Reforming the UK childcare system isn't just possible, but necessary. In 2021, a record number of households spent over 30% of their income on rent, putting immense pressure on families, particularly those with children. At the same time, the scarcity and increasing costs of child care options present additional challenges for single mothers, many who work minimum-wage jobs. Hope for Single Moms is actively tackling these barriers with the support of generous donors. Having the ability to send your child to a high-quality early child care programs is paramount, especially for children in poverty who often start school at a disadvantage compared to their peers. These initiatives not only enhance children's development and well-being but also, when combined with mothers pursuing education, create a mutually beneficial outcome for women, children, and society. As the costs of housing and child care continue to rise, it is crucial for both individuals and businesses to prioritize investments in women and children.
