Without audiences, Shakespeare would have been “just” a poet, and conversational iambic pentameter would not have yielded thousands of new English words and phrases still used today. Or, as we used to say at The Late Seating at Actors, art is use it or lose it, so let’s use it and support local artists. Performing arts do not exist without audiences. Audiences have been in decline for decades. That means performing arts leaders and boards are making hard choices. When those choices are purpose-driven business decisions that are mindful of what audiences want, we can create sustainable arts business models.

Reading Jon Fosse's WTD message has me reflecting a lot on the intersections between arts, arts education, and anti-bias work (which also happens to be the intersection of my professional work experience). In today’s WTD message Fosse writes, “Art, good art, manages in its wonderful way to combine the utterly unique with the universal. It lets us understand what is different—what is foreign, you might say—as being universal. By doing so, art breaks through the boundaries between languages, geographical regions, countries. It brings together not just everyone’s individual qualities but also, in another sense, the individual characteristics of every group of people, for example of every nation. Art does this not by levelling differences and making everything the same, but, on the contrary, by showing us what is different from us…” When we talk about anti-bias education, we largely focus on four main pillars: Exploring Identity, Interpreting Differences, Challenging Bias, and Championing Justice. In many ways, this is exactly what arts education enables. The theatre education pedagogy of Creative Drama calls for participants to imagine, enact, and reflect upon the human experience. To borrow a phrase from Dr. Rudine Sims Bishop, the “mother” of multicultural children’s literature, I’d argue that arts education -provides participants with “mirrors, windows and sliding glass doors” through which they can see themselves, the lived experiences of others, and the possibilities that exist in worlds beyond their own. ? In this way, while art can help to illuminate the fact that what is “different” and “unknown” is also inherently universal, anti-bias work at its core strives to make universal the fact that every group has its own lived experiences and feelings of oppression. One experience is not greater than the other; rather, they are intertwined. We must understand this in order to see the way towards and work for a better future. We're seeing changes to structures that haven't been touched in decades out of necessity. Many performing arts groups are trying to get back to pre-pandemic audience levels by doing what worked before. But the audiences spend differently now and there’s little research as to what for sure works. New ideas need to be tried. But the only way you can do that successfully is to have a company efficient and flexible enough to handle multiple inter-departmental changes. Fantastic weekend in Leeds with Improbable Theatre and SLUNG LOW LIMITED at their warehouse for Devoted and Disgruntled 19 - ‘What are we going to do about theatre + performing arts?’ These thoughts are only half formed but there were a few things that popped out across the weekend: - There was some sense of optimism with Labour’s recent push of arts education and access to the arts about a brighter future for the perception of the creative industries amid a stretched environment. - Discussion on the shortage of technical workers and undersubscribed training places across the industry, a need for grassroots schools and youth areas intervention in advocacy and inspiration in these areas. What is the touring model for taking a portable lighting kits/model boxes/sound with skilled workshops? Backstage workers at institutions are often volunteering to speak to schools, and professionalising/training should be done to facilitate and drive these practises. - This needs to be tallied with clear regional, local education partnerships also linking up with trades in these areas with institutions in accredited qualifications/experience/employment pathways without holding onto participants, empowering them. Feeding into this generally was also the role of National Organisations vs Regional and the possible coverage/roles/limitations of each. - The arts and advocating for itself. Partnering with academic institutions, work is there to be done in how there can be integration with other disciplines/industries as well as the benefits that each can provide each other and feeding this into arts education / arts education practises. - There was interesting discussions around various funding models including corporate sponsorship, direct funding for work by government departments rather than arts council, the potential for collective action in combined pitches bringing together companies and artists rather than in isolation. - There were interesting thoughts around the private school model of artists in residence, how could this model work for state schools billed towards making ourselves redundant? Anchoring this there is the sense of a chance for the arts with an incoming government (hopefully) to set a part of the agenda, that in the chaotic transition of government there are gaps that can be pushed to create a better sector. And with the frequent sharing of resources/ideas and collaboration with artists from across the UK over the weekend, this seems at least possible. There are many other issues (pay/SEND paths/representation/freelance onus and application processes/institutional issues) and this isn’t intended to address all of the industry as a whole, but just some topics that popped up in a couple of days. With this Open Space Event, we were hosted beautifully and effortlessly by all of the team, while knowing the iceberg of the incredible amount of work running underneath it.
