THE HISTORY AND PRESENT STATE OF THE AFFORDABLE HOUSING INDUSTRIAL COMPLEX IN AMERICA CAN BE SUMMED UP IN ONE WORD: BROKEN DON'T BE FOOLED BY SLICK PROMOTIONAL POSTS THAT MAKE IT SEEM LIKE YOUR LOCAL, STATE OR FEDERAL GOVERNMENT ELECTED AND APPOINTED OFFICIALS ARE SOLVING THE AFFORDABLE HOUSING CRISIS. WHEN IT COMES TO AFFORDABLE HOUSING, THE PUBLIC AND TAXPAYERS MUST ASK: AT WHAT COST TO THE TAXPAYERS AND HOW LONG IS THE AFFORDABILITY PERIOD? EVERY TAXPAYER SHOULD BE ASKING THEIR ELECTED AND APPOINTED OFFICIALS THE FOLLOWING QUESTIONS: 1. How much local, state, and federal funding, tax credits, density bonus increase, waivers of impact fees, or other government benefit or incentive did the project receive? 2. What is the affordability period for each project and, if the affordability period is not in perpetuity or permanent, WHY NOT? 3. What guarantees exist that tenants in the affordable housing units will not be displaced after an "affordability period expires? Any LOCAL, STATE or FEDERAL official that does not MANDATE "permanent" affordability periods or affordability "IN PERPETUITY" for any project receiving some government benefit is commiting MALFEASANCE and should quit, be removed from office or be terminated. IN MOST CASES WHEN IT COMES TO AFFORDABLE HOUSING, the public and taxpayer are being fooled into thinking their elected and appointed officials are solving problems, when in fact, all hey have done is "KICK THE CAN DOWN THE ROAD" to burden a future generation with the same problem or crisis!

I spoke with @95bFM last week about our campaign calling on Government to implement Duty to Assist legislation that would support us to end and prevent homelessness. Basically, if you and your family are experiencing homelessness, there is no clear responsibility on the state to provide you with support. This means, you can turn up to WINZ, ask for help, and there is a real possibility that you and your whānau could be turned away to sleep on the street. Duty to Assist legislation would ensure that there was a clear responsibility placed upon Government agencies to provide you with the support you need, not just to access shelter, but to gain access to permanent accommodation. Homelessness will not be ended by funding homelessness services. The mahi we do is important, but without structural change, will not end homelessness. Homelessness is not an individual issue, it's systemic, and it's structural. If we want to end homelessness we must address the structural realities that allow it to continue. Duty to Assist legislation is one piece of the puzzle that will support us to move past managing homelessness, to ending it once and for all. Our communities are experiencing a crisis of youth and young adult homelessness. But we have evidence that progress is possible. A new report, released by the Office of Homeless Youth and A Way Home WA, shows that focused and sustained partnerships between state and federal agencies, nonprofit partners, and philanthropy have moved the needle on youth homelessness in Washington state. It's clear we have much work left to do, but this report affirms the need to deepen our commitment to this work. Yesterday the U.S. Supreme Court heard arguments in the case of City of Grants Pass, Oregon v. Gloria Johnson. The case aims to determine whether local governments can make it a crime for someone to live outside and unsheltered if they have no home. As this hotly contested case makes clear, the problem of homelessness is getting worse. Every year, more and more Americans experience homelessness—and cities and communities increasingly struggle to bring the crisis under control. What can we do? That’s a complicated question. But at SVDP, we believe the first (and best) solution is homelessness prevention: directing life-saving resources to people on the brink of homelessness. At Lutheran Social Services of Northern California, we are deeply troubled by the recent Supreme Court decision to uphold the ban on sleeping outdoors in homelessness cases. This ruling not only criminalizes the most vulnerable members of our society but also fails to address the root causes of homelessness. Homelessness is a complex issue that requires compassion, understanding, and comprehensive solutions. Criminalizing individuals for simply trying to find a place to rest exacerbates the problem and diverts resources away from meaningful interventions. Instead of punitive measures, we should be investing in affordable housing, mental health services, and supportive programs that provide a path to stability and self-sufficiency. We stand with our clients and all individuals experiencing homelessness, advocating for policies that promote dignity and respect. It's time to focus on long-term solutions that address the systemic issues leading to homelessness, rather than penalizing those who are already struggling. LAHSA has announced The Greater Los Angeles Homeless Count. It will be from January 23rd thru January 25th. It will cover LA County with a few exceptions where they are conducting their own counts. In their own words: "We count to help the thousands of men, women, and families that are sleeping without a permanent home across Los Angeles County every night. The data collected is an essential component in understanding the scope and nature of homelessness in Los Angeles County and helps LAHSA and its partners deliver services where they are needed most. Homelessness is a humanitarian crisis that takes the support of our entire community to end."
