Born in 1910, Margaret Dunning learned to drive at age 8 and happened to live next door to Henry Ford where her love of cars blossomed. Her prized possession? A 1930 Packard Roadster. She studied for two years at the University of Michigan but was forced to drop out at the height of the Great Depression when her family needed help to keep the family business afloat. During World War II, Margaret volunteered in Plymouth’s Red Cross motor pool, driving a truck. From 1962 to 1984, Margaret served on the board of Community Federal Credit Union, including 19 years as president. Under her leadership, the Credit Union increased its assets from $1 million to $40 million. She challenged the status quo in male-dominated industries her entire life. Margaret passed away just before her 105th birthday. She changed her own oil and spark plugs until the very end. “I love the old cars,” she once said. “I love the smell of gasoline. It runs in my veins.” What an incredible life she lead!

On November 28, 2023, just 33 days shy of his 100th birthday, Charles Thomas Munger passed. Charlie, as he is popularly known, was the Vice Chairman of Berkshire Hathaway and Warren Buffett’s partner and sidekick for 64 years. When the two first met in 1959, they became instant friends and then investment buddies when Charlie started his own partnership in 1962. Their business partnership was cemented in 1978 when Charlie became Vice Chairman of Berkshire Hathaway, perfecting a 46 year pilot-copilot relationship that steered the company into becoming one of the largest and most respected in the world. In the 2023 Berkshire Hathaway Annual Report, released in March of this year, Warren penned a tribute to Charlie on the first page calling him “The Architect of Berkshire Hathaway.” In it, he referred to himself as the “general contractor” in charge of carrying out the “day-to-day construction of [Charlie’s] vision.” It was a touching confession and certainly well deserved. During my time in Texas this past weekend, the Legacy and Ownership conversation pulled all the heart strings as I was talking about it to the team and staring at my beautiful wife. At my previous company and like many in the industry, Legacy/Ownership doesn't exist for their agents. There is no opportunity to leave a legacy or have ownership. Looking back at my journey, 8 years at my previous company, I don't care how hard it might be to leave relationships that you build behind (if they were true, they will still be there after you leave the company), how hard it is to leave a crusade (you can keep the crusade alive with the new company) - I don't care how hard it is to leave because your family is counting on you; your future family is counting on you; your legacy awaits!
