If your weekend to-do list includes completing your ballot, please vote YES on Proposition 2. Here's why: Prop. 2 will make the most urgent repairs and upgrades in our local public schools by authorizing a $10 billion investment, including $1.5 billion for community colleges--without raising any taxes or fees. Prop 2 will: --Improve local community colleges to ensure students are learning in safe environments free of asbestos, mold, lead paint and leaking pipes. (Remember, some of our colleges are more than 100 years old!) --Upgrade career technical and vocational education classrooms. --Give student more opportunities to attend community colleges by expanding access to quality job training and professional development. --Provide returning veterans access to job training programs so they can secure a college degree or find stable, good-paying jobs. You'll see the League's endorsement of Prop 2 in your California voter guide! #YesonProp2

Early application deadlines will be here before you know it, so let's start talking about?it! It's better to start early for these applications while?summer is still in session and schoolwork isn't piling?up.? Early application for most colleges closes November 1st at 11:59pm. For UC schools and Cal Tech, there is no early application, however they boast an earlier deadline than most schools, with their application deadline closing at 11:59pm on November 30th. So be sure to get your application in before then. Early application can also be more beneficial to the?college admissions teams decision on who gets?admitted. We'll be talking about it tomorrow in our?blog, so keep an eye out! #ivyleague #co27 #co28 #college #collegeadmission #collegeconsulting #ivyleagueconsultant #collegeapplication #applicationprocess #applications #admissions

Location is always an important factor when choosing a college. So we sifted through a number of unhelpful internet lists based on mismatched criteria (none of which were D3 focused) to create a ranking of College Towns that’s actually useful to D3 recruits. Here's how we did it & who made the grade... Link: https://lnkd.in/gcs_zmHb

In our years working with high school students, we’ve seen many families focus on colleges in a specific geographic region, rely on college rankings, or fixate on the most well-known cities. But by being open-minded about other parts of the country and digging beyond myths they’ve heard about certain places and schools, students often discover “hidden gems” where they can — and do—thrive academically, socially, and financially. https://lnkd.in/gqaXXZje

There was an interesting segment on the Today Show earlier today. Thanks to Amy DuBois for sharing with us! It's an interesting approach and they certainly "found" an independent educational consultant at the top of the price range - this person is charging $120K - and compared his cost to someone storing their yacht in the Hamptons. Some things to consider when working with Golden Educational Consulting: 1. It's about the student, not the college. 2. We customize our plans to meet the student and family's goals. There are different options for students who want to attend a public, state university and may need some help with test prep and organization as compared to a student applying to 10-20 "elite" colleges. 3. We offer a healthy approach to the college search, based on the research on the stress of the college application process. (Did we mention that was Dr. Thom's dissertation?) Like many industries, there are a range of options and choices. I appreciate how Craig Melvin likened it to hiring a tennis coach for your child and how Carson Daly admitted he had no idea what a "letter of continued interest" meant. We understand the process and our team has 150+ years of expertise. We are here to support students and help them navigate the college admission and financial aid process in a healthy manner. #collegeadmissions #collegecoach #healthyapproach #goldeneducationalconsulting #doctorthom #collegeconsulting #collegecoaching https://lnkd.in/ecvWmq9S

The truth is, college admissions, and college retention, has been crushing for a few years now. My 23 year old started his freshman year of university in the fall of 2019, and we all know how that went. His tuition rose to - I am not even joking here - over $75,000 per year. My EFC as a single parent earning a good living was set at over half of that. Imagine having nearly $40k in cash-on-hand yearly for your child's education? I know I don't. So the borrowing and planning and forecasting began. In a tight future job market, the risk analysis is tough on families. Some are quick to say not everyone needs a college degree, and that is true. Some point out the value in trade school and military careers and dozens of other pathways, and all of that is true. But I am quick to point out that we also need writers (like me) and singers, actors, dancers, artists, translators, teachers, accountants, attorneys, chemists, researchers, arborists, physicians, data scientists, graphic designers, architects, and I could make this list longer than you care to read. Some kids just need to go to college. But do we all really need to go so far into debt, anxiety, and fear just to keep our world on track? I fear very much for the kids who are so very smart but who lack deep enough pockets and strong enough resolve.
