?? Is TikTok's STEM tab legit? Or a legal tactic??? TikTok’s STEM tab launch in the midst of a multi-state lawsuit over child safety is…ironic to say the least. MAYBE it’s a step towards meaningful education content, but my gut says that it’s just PR gymnastics. Either way, TikTok recognizing its influence on learning in the US is a step in the right direction. Surprisingly (or unsurprisingly,) the China-only version of TikTok has been promoting STEM-based content since its inception (in stark comparison to the content it promotes in other cultures.) This begs the REAL question: is the platform willing to prioritize depth over dopamine? Or are they just here so they don't get fined? https://lnkd.in/gaXMSvKx

TikTok recently launched a new STEM feed in the UK - a dedicated area on the platform featuring content in science, tech, engineering, and maths. When I speak to B2B leaders about social media, here's how the conversation often goes: Them: “Our audience isn’t on TikTok; we won’t see a return.” Me: “They’re there; you just need to reach them.” ? STEM creators are set to soar—build partnerships now to stay ahead. ? Start creating engaging content: Think product demos, tutorials, challenges, Make it informative, explaining complex concepts - NOT just a sales pitch! ? Talent acquisition: Could this be the place to find talent? Anyone interested, this is worth read:? https://lnkd.in/ecJxzsuV

?? Did you know children spend more time consuming social content than eating? A study found that children aged 4-11 spend 85 minutes a day on YouTube, with the platform capturing 50% of their total screen time. By comparison, kids spend an average of just 30 minutes a day eating. Nearly 60% of 4-to-5-year-olds regularly watch YouTube content, highlighting its growing role in their daily lives. The way young children engage with the world is changing, and platforms like YouTube offer a unique opportunity to inspire the next generation. It’s not just entertainment - it’s a tool for education, creativity, and sparking interest in future careers. At Kids Invent Stuff we’ve seen how YouTube can empower kids aged 4-11 to dream big, think creatively, and explore the world of engineering and invention. Through fun, engaging STEM content, we’re showing them that problem-solving is for everyone - no matter their background or experience. The BBC has emphasized the need to start careers education early, and YouTube can play a critical role. It’s accessible, free, and full of relatable role models. By providing representation, it inspires kids who might never see engineers or inventors who look like them or share their experiences. Here’s why this is so important for 4-to-11-year-olds: ? Early exposure to career ideas makes kids more likely to aspire to skilled roles. ? For many, YouTube reduces social mobility barriers by showing diverse creators, engineers, and inventors solving real-world problems. ? Kids are already spending more time consuming social content than doing many daily activities - we need to make that time count. ?? At Kids Invent Stuff, we’re using YouTube to help kids see that engineering is fun, exciting, and something they can be part of. Here’s how you can support our mission: ? Share our work to help us reach more kids aged 4-11. ? Partner with us to expand our projects and create even more inspiring content. ? Advocate for the importance of early STEM education through platforms like YouTube. ?? Let’s inspire the next generation of engineers, inventors, and problem-solvers, one video at a time. #STEM #Engineering #YouTube #SocialImpact #Education #InspiringFutureEngineers #KidsInventStuff

TikTok Challenges. Do you remember when they had us school folks in a chokehold a few years back? There was the Devious Licks challenge where kids across the country were vandalizing school bathrooms & recording the mayhem. Cracking sinks, taking fixtures, clogging toilets. As fast as they could be fixed, items were destroyed again. And videos of the damage went viral. In response, schools began issuing policies that restricted student movement, instituted sign out sheets & assigned teachers to be bathroom monitors during their free periods. Some schools even closed all but one set of bathrooms in the entire building. And of course consequences for students who were caught were steep. On the heels of that challenge, another one emerged with students hitting or otherwise attacking teachers. Sometimes on camera & sometimes not. Felony charges were even brought against some of those students. Like other schools, our high school was nearing panic as teachers felt increasingly uncomfortable that our kids might join the frenzied movement. Our administration started to consider letters to families and kids outlining harsher discipline policies. Teachers were upset, rightfully so, about the prospect of losing prep time to monitor bathrooms. So what did we do? Advisory! I thought that rather than making top down ‘solutions’ we should bring our students into the conversation. I wrote an advisory lesson that featured articles about the impact of the challenges & the different school responses. The lesson included discussion questions to push our students to consider the situation & how our school should respond. It worked well! Students had so much to say about the ways other schools were handling the issues. They had suggestions for how our school should & shouldn’t handle it. More than the school policies, our students surprised us all by asserting that their culture, their student culture, would never be swayed to follow the idiocy of the challenges. ??They said they would never treat their school like that.? ??They would never treat their teachers like that.? ????They didn’t need school staff to police them with restrictive policies. They would keep each other in check. ?? Essentially, they invoked positive peer pressure. And it worked. Our school never had to contend with that challenge or even address it again. I’m sharing this because it speaks to the power of: ??Student voice ??Bringing students INTO the conversation ??Advisory to be transformative? ??Advisory to shape student culture So consider starting an advisory program with your students. If you have one, consider tweaking it to be intentional in this way. If either of those things sounds overwhelming, I can help! For 5 years I led a strong program in a Harlem school with lessons I wrote for our student body, training & observation for advisors to develop their practice and increasingly creative ways to engage students. #advisory #studentvoice #progressivesolutions?

Social Media & Teens: Often social media gets a bad rap when it comes to teenagers, but it’s time we flip the narrative. With the right guidance, teens can use these platforms as tools for connection, learning, and growth. Here are a few ways teens can harness the positive power of social media: 1?? Building Communities: From shared hobbies to activism, social media allows teens to find their people, creating bonds that transcend geography. 2?? Showcasing Creativity: Platforms like Instagram, TikTok, and YouTube empower teens to express themselves and even explore career paths in content creation, art, and more. 3?? Learning Opportunities: From educational videos to skill-building tutorials, social media is a treasure trove of knowledge when used intentionally. 4?? Spreading Positivity: A simple post or comment can uplift someone’s day, fostering kindness and empathy online. As adults, it’s our role to guide teens toward mindful social media use. Let’s encourage them to create, share, and engage responsibly—turning these platforms into stepping stones for their future. #SocialMedia #Teens #PositiveImpact #DigitalWellbeing

So it's real! Last night I was out in Cambridge with friends, when I wanted to show them something I saw on TikTok. At 23:15 pm I opened it and saw the below communication - the TikTok ban notification officially popped up on my screen. As a British student studying at Harvard, the irony is not lost on me - I could travel back to London and use TikTok if I wanted to. What makes me genuinely sad is that I've witnessed firsthand the incredible power of this platform in amplifying young voices and fostering genuine connection across cultures. I love using it everyday and so do many of my friends, and creators across the US. TikTok isn't just an app – it's where I've watched young people find their voice, build communities, and drive real change. Through it, I've learned about Puerto Rican culture from Bad Bunny fans, discovered Irish language activism, and seen young people tackle complex social issues with remarkable clarity and courage. I worked at TikTok for over three years, I didn't leave because I didn't believe in the Trust and Safety mission, I left to become more engrained in Youth psychology and development, to learn from academics, to continue building the bridge from big tech to experts across the world. The talent, dedication, and genuine care for user safety I've seen from TikTok's teams has been inspiring. They've worked tirelessly to create a space where young people can learn, grow, and express themselves freely. Now, I'm grappling with complex emotions. How do we balance these security concerns while preserving spaces that empower young voices? How can we ensure that the next generation doesn't lose a platform that has become so vital to their expression and education? How can we work with online platforms rather than against them? This isn't just about an app – it's about the future of digital spaces where young people can thrive. I'd love to hear your thoughts on how we can work together to create secure AND empowering online communities for youth. #YouthVoices #DigitalFuture #TikTokBan #OnlineSafety
