Honored to have received an invitation from Senator Jerry Cirino to present at the Ohio Senate Workforce and Higher Education Committee alongside Commissioner Regovich, Lakeland Community College President Dr. Ahuja, and Mentor Public Schools Superintendent Craig Heath. In the 14 months since we launched our unique collaboration, which embraces a paradigm shift in workforce education by aligning government, higher education, industry partners, and local K-12 institutions, the results have been extraordinary. This fall, both Mentor Public Schools and Lakeland Community College reached historic milestones, achieving the highest levels of college credit participation in the history of each institution. Mentor Public Schools achieved another significant milestone, with over 43% of junior and senior students participating in career technical education programs. Additionally, organizations in Lake County secured over $16 million in competitive workforce training grants, further advancing opportunities for workforce development. This partnership is built on a shared commitment to future-focused programming, ensuring all students are college and career ready by equipping them with the skills and opportunities needed to thrive in a rapidly evolving workforce. The University of Michigan’s expansion of its Go Blue Guarantee as early as next fall is a big step forward in making higher education more accessible. Programs like this—along with efforts at Wayne State University and other Michigan institutions—are opening new pathways for young people. These initiatives don’t just change lives; they pave the way for a future where equitable access to higher education is the norm. At Mosaic Youth Theatre of Detroit, we see the power of opportunity every day. Over the past 30 years, 95% of Mosaic alumni have gone on to college, with a 74% college persistence rate. As we prepare youth for post-secondary education and careers, programs like the Go Blue Guarantee help amplify their voices and create new possibilities. Let’s continue the work to turn possibilities into achievements. #EducationMatters #YouthEmpowerment #EducationEquity #PathwaysToPossibility

Five charter public schools in western Washington have achieved a remarkable milestone, with 68% of their graduates from the class of 2024 accepted into 4-year colleges. The schools, including Summit Olympus in Tacoma, Whatcom Intergenerational High School in Bellingham, Summit Atlas, Summit Sierra, and Rainier Valley Leadership Academy in Seattle, have demonstrated their commitment to academic excellence and student success. These charter schools serve a disproportionately high percentage of Black, Indigenous, students of color, and students from low-income households, providing them with an alternative learning environment that allows them to thrive. Summit Atlas, a charter school in Seattle, has maintained strong graduation and college acceptance rates, with over 95% of its students getting accepted to a four-year college. The school focuses on ensuring that its students are set up for success beyond high school, whether they choose college, other training, or a career. Despite the success of charter schools in the state, challenges remain, including less funding than traditional public schools. However, the schools are committed to ensuring that all students are set up for life-long success, and are advocating for equitable funding to support their mission. What are your thoughts on the role of charter schools in providing alternative education options for students and their families? Do you believe charter schools should receive the same funding as traditional public schools?

The narrative surrounding elitism in postsecondary education is harmful toward efforts in decreasing the wealth gap and fighting poverty. Postsecondary education offers societal and democratic value in addition to economic value.
Hope IS a strategy. Ignore the Harvard biz school pundits. Without strategic and purposeful optimism, we are doomed. So today I’m grateful to Complete College America for laying out in painstaking detail exactly why there is hope for higher ed— if only we are willing to fight and rescue it from its worst impulses. This essential report says the quiet parts out loud: ??Elitism rules the current system and that’s no accident. ??The primary problem faced by public colleges and universities? Underfunding. ??Higher ed cannot support a healthy democracy if it continues its privatized ways. We have to work on making it a public good available to all. Bottom line, this CCA report affirms what’s at stake and clarifies that students are humans first- and always. It reflects a real journey for CCA and one that thrills and inspires me. This is a #RealCollege must read ???????????????????? Way to go Yolanda Watson Spiva, Ph.D., BCC Dhanfu E. Elston, Ph.D. Charles Ansell #highereducation #affordability #basicneeds #democracy
