"New York State has 670,000 residents who are illegal migrants. An estimated 51,200 illegal migrants work in the personal care industry — with 20,900 maids and housekeepers, 16,800 home health aides, 7,000 child care workers and 6,500 personal care aides. Some 42,300 restaurant workers are believed to be undocumented — 7,000 chefs, 17,000 cooks, 9,100 food prep workers and 9,200 waiters. Another 48,500 undocumented workers are part of the construction industry — 29,500 laborers, 12,800 carpenters and 6,200 painters. https://lnkd.in/g_V2fXnX Canada’s Temporary Foreign Worker Program has been criticized for a long time now. A documentary a few years ago showed the conditions of living quarters and raised concerns. The talking point that Canadian jobs are being taken is a popular one, however farm work is not something Canadians are applying to do. The minimum wage has also steadily risen and although it is not a living wage, I would need more evidence that foriegn workers keep the minimum wage at a certain place. The news story refers to “an influx of foreign workers” and on its face that seems fine, but it still positions the issue as one of the foriegn worker themselves not the issue of who hires them, the gaps in the system, or why measures already in place aren’t enforced. It’s also rhetoric that reinforces and legitimizes discrimination and the abuse these workers deal with. #diversityequityinclusion
