Children living in foster, kinship and residential care are one of the most disadvantaged cohorts in our school system due to a myriad of reasons. These reasons include the impact of early trauma on the developing brain, lack of early connections and healthy attachment, the trauma of being removed and placed in foster, kinship or residential care, moving school and home multiple times, anxiety, fear and an inability to learn in a classroom setting. Early targeted intervention is critical in the primary school years to help these children catch up to their peers and stop them falling between the cracks. This intervention needs to be individual, relationship and connection based, occur in a place where the child feels safe, 'meet the child where they are', and be fun, flexible and engaging enough to help children want to learn. Focussing on maths and literacy is critical to ensuring that these children are not left behind and can catch up to the school curriculum. Our Little Stars Learners Program is an initiative of and supported by the Little Stars Foundation. We have already had measurable and ongoing success working with children living in foster, kinship and out of home care - helping them to improve confidence, self esteem and catch up to their peers and enjoy going to school. Our program has a long term impact too. By engaging children in their education we are also helping our community. Children who are disengaged with school are 45% more likely to be engaged with the youth justice system. It's more than just a job---it's a community of young people making positive contributions to society each and every day, making connections and learning lifelong skills along the way. ??? ? It's less of a ‘program’, and more of a real-life support community, encompassing techniques for supported living and care that all young people deserve. ? ? From our experience, we know three significant factors contribute to success in a person’s life:? ? 1?? Timely application of resources? 2?? Healthy and supportive network? 3?? ?? At Speak Up for Kids, we're incredibly proud of the impact our Foster Youth Resource Concierge is having in the lives of young adults aging out of foster care. Transitioning to adulthood is never easy—especially when life has already thrown so many curveballs their way. That’s why our program is designed to provide a true “concierge” experience. We’re not just handing out resources; we’re supporting those wrapped around these young adults as we come alongside and walk with these remarkable young people as they face the obstacles and setbacks that can easily turn hope into doubt. What does this look like in real life? ?? One young man recently showed up on time, fully prepared for his appointment—no reminders needed! It’s a huge win that speaks to his growing sense of responsibility and readiness for the next chapter. ?? We’ve seen youth embrace their career aspirations, applying for jobs and internships with confidence. They’re taking ownership of their future and are motivated to achieve their goals. ?? One young adult took the bold step of requesting accommodations at school, advocating for their needs to ensure they can succeed academically. It’s a moment that showed us just how far self-advocacy and courage can take someone. ?? Another client is mastering budgeting skills, a small yet critical step in their journey toward financial independence and stability. Every day, our youth are taking these strides—big and small—towards a brighter future. We’re honored to celebrate their wins and help them see that they can overcome the roadblocks in their way. ???? We're thrilled to announce the launch of our developmental playgroups for children aged 0-5 experiencing mild to moderate developmental delays. These playgroups provide a supportive environment for your child's learning and growth, free of charge and without the need for an official diagnosis or insurance. ?? Our 12 week playgroups are offered twice a week. Please reach out for more information on the time and location that best works for you! If your child is awaiting formal services from the Golden Gate Regional Center (GGRC) or the San Francisco Unified School District (SFUSD), these playgroups are a fantastic way to bridge that waiting period and ensure continuous developmental support. ?? Ongoing Enrollment: Children who continue to meet eligibility criteria can re-enroll in subsequent cohorts, allowing them to receive consistent support until they transition to formal services. ??
