VP debate coverage channeled an "obsession with optics, infuriating at the best of times, but indefensible when one of the candidates has just refused to acknowledge an election result—perhaps the highest form of political incivility," writes Jon Allsop. https://lnkd.in/edUZaScu

>The PRESS: The naked effort by the media to swing this race for Democrats has become something to behold. The conservative Media Research Center’s most recent?analysis?of broadcast evening news coverage finds 78% favorable coverage of Harris versus 85% negative coverage of Trump. MRC notes this imbalance is bigger than in 2016 or in 2020. The print media has been so obviously one-sided in their critical coverage of Trump, no analysis is even necessary to show the bias. Get ready for increasingly wild, desperate hit pieces on Trump. >The bigger reason to get out: Endorsements these days are little more than journalist virtue-signaling. They play little to no role in electoral outcomes. The Hill in 2016?analyzed?the endorsements of the nation’s major newspapers: 57 came out for?Hillary Clinton, two for Trump. Enraged opinion writers might consider how better to connect to voters, instead of telling them how to vote. Courtesy Kimberley A. Strassell, The Wall Street Journal

KEY POINTS: (1) Misinformation is an honest mistake. Disinformation is deliberate falsity; (2) Under Trump, the Republican Party is now fully committed to spreading disinformation — deliberate falsehoods; (3) Republicans use lies, smears, fake news and conspiracy theories to sway voters based on their fears, greed, ignorance and bigotries. https://lnkd.in/gN5pWBYu

For the first time since 1988, the Commission on Presidential Debates will not be sponsoring tomorrow night's conversation between former President Donald Trump and President Joe Biden. I spoke with UT Tyler Public Administration Professor Wink Ken to discuss the move away from the Commission, his expectations for the debate, and whether it could impact local races. Watch my full interview and debate breakdown via the story below for KLTV 7. Link: https://lnkd.in/ePM3XGvP #PresidentialDebate #Politics #Journalism #Interviews

The The New York Times may have gotten through the election, its famed needle intact, but now it faces a lot of questions under a 2nd Trump term, such as: Will it be able to get Trump voters to subscribe? Can it withstand Trump's escalating attacks on the media? What lessons did it learn from covering Trump 1.0, and how will it apply that to coverage of his second term? Read the memo where Times leaders set the tone for how they'll approach those seemingly impossible challenges, in Business Insider: https://lnkd.in/eSNTKuR7

NEWSOM WAITS IN THE WINGS In the aftermath of Democrat President Joe Biden's poor performance Thursday at the CNN Presidential Debate with ex-president Donald Trump, the leading Republican candidate, the news media is red-hot with speculation about what comes next in the 2024 race. Even though Biden did remarkably well in a campaign appearance Friday, media stories of the 81-year-old's problems with memory lapses and fragility have taken over the cycles of print and broadcast journalism. Among the examples: After the debate, the New York Times editorial board called on Biden to do the right thing and resign for the good of the nation. Time Magazine's new cover has Biden, depicted as a frail elderly man, wandering off the stage. Axios urged the president's family to urge him to resign. The Wall Street Journal has reported that Biden's memory lapses have been noticed and are of concern to European leaders; and the WSJ reported that White House staff has blacked-out criticism of Biden to avoid political reprisals. On Friday, Biden said he will not resign because he's the only one who can beat Trump, a convicted felon facing other serious legal issues, because he believes his opponent is a "threat to democracy," a serial liar and an immoral man who was recently convicted of sexually abusing a woman in public. Vice President Kamala Harris, some feel, couldn't beat Trump because her polling is below Biden's own. Pundits are scrambling to determine what happens next. The Democratic National Convention will be held later this summer. Among other potential Biden replacements, one name has repeatedly stood out: Gavin Newsom, the charismatic and youthful governor of California is a Biden surrogate. The state has a population of some 40 million -- and has the seventh largest economy in the world. In a recent CNN interview, Newsom said Trump has surrounded himself in an environment of "corruption" and the governor "refuses to kiss the ring." Check out Bloomberg's editorial below.

NEW: I think there’s a simple question journalists need to answer: Why, for the first time ever, has the President of the United States received less press coverage during his term than the guy he beat? The answer certainly is not that those stories are more newsworthy. It’s time to rethink that unbalanced coverage and give some attention to the guy in the White House doing normal president stuff. Then, the press can turn to millions of Americans who are eager to explain why they are supporting Joe Biden. Read my latest for Heartland Signal here: https://lnkd.in/gK8nFcBt
OPINION: Biden voters are plentiful. News stories about them? Not so much.

And other status-quo MSM--Politico, bc it doesnt like where Harris chooses to speak, CNN for that Town Hall etc, but definitely its always about $$$$$$$, How in part did 2016 occur? It wasnt just the mass voter purges in states like Michigan w/GOP governors. The NYT has become less reputable as a journalistic entity than the Weekly World News--not sure it even still exists, but id rather read about space aliens than the Times' election coverage. https://lnkd.in/eEhQck82

Merchants Of Truth In Industry Of Lies - Unlawful Act By Andrea Lawful-Sanders = Black talk radio station WURD in Philadelphia has ended its relationship with host Andrea Lawful-Sanders in the wake of criticism the station has endured after Lawful-Sanders acknowledged using predetermined questions from President Joe Biden’s campaign team for her July 3 conversation with the embattled leader. In a lengthy statement, Sara M. Lomax president and CEO of WURD Radio, said the station and Lawful-Sanders “have mutually agreed to part ways, effective immediately.” Lawful-Sanders did not immediately respond to an email request for comment. WURD Radio and Lawful-Sanders faced criticism in journalism and political circles when it came to light that Lawful-Sanders was sent pre-written questions from Biden campaign officials and agreed to use four of the questions provided. Lomax emphasized that the station had no knowledge of Lawful-Sanders’ discussions with Biden’s team and that her decision ran afoul of the station’s journalistic standards. = This post is a book review: Merchants of Truth: The Business of News and the Fight for Facts is a 2019 book by Jill Abramson that follows four news organizations— The New York Times, The Washington Post, BuzzFeed, and VICE News — through changes in news media technology and standards over the course of the 21st century. The author was formerly Executive Editor of The New York Times. Merchants of Truth is the groundbreaking and gripping story of the precarious state of the news business told by one of our most eminent journalists. The new digital reality nearly kills two venerable newspapers with an aging readership while creating two media behemoths with a ballooning and fickle audience of millennials. We get to know the defenders of the legacy presses as well as the outsized characters who are creating the new speed-driven media competitors. The players include Jeff Bezos and Martin Baron (The Washington Post), Arthur Sulzberger and dean baquet (The New York Times), Jonah Peretti (BuzzFeed), and Shane Smith (VICE) as well as their reporters and anxious readers. Merchants of Truth raises crucial questions that concern the well-being of our society. We are facing a crisis in trust that threatens the free press. Abramson’s book points us to the future. = We all know the definition of Politics: Politics = Industry Of Lies Accurate information is the fuel of democracy. Without access to facts and independent media, democracy withers and elections are hampered. Media manipulation refers to orchestrated campaigns in which actors exploit the distinctive features of broadcasting mass communications or digital media platforms to mislead, misinform, or create a narrative that advance their interests and agendas. Now we are at the heart of this post: Merchants Of Truth In Industry Of Lies - Unlawful Act By Andrea Lawful-Sanders What should Political Journalists like Andrea Lawful-Sanders do? Get Fired??

President Biden remains a good choice for the Democrats due to these reasons: 1. Biden's honest assessment that his adverse performance in the debate was due to lack of rest( he's human too, remember?) 2. The potential fallout of the newly released viral memo on former President Trump's machinations. 3. His looming potential conviction despite Trump's hush money case being transferred to September While the Supreme Court ruling regarding Trump's immunity is a major blow, sustaining the momentum of the Democrat campaign with Biden as the nominee will require closing the narrow gap consistently seen in the polls. Replacing the current president with another candidate may not hold much water, given Trump's escalating polarization and popularity among voters, despite his obvious flaws. Instead of defence, the Democrats should launch an offence. And President Biden should prepare himself for a tough fight ahead. #USelections2024 https://lnkd.in/gCq_HPS4

Voting machines must meet two requirements. They must count the vote accurately, and people must?believe?they count the vote accurately. The second requirement is distinct from and just as important as the first. Likewise with newspapers. We must be accurate, and we must be believed to be accurate. It’s a bitter pill to swallow, but we are failing on the second requirement. Most people believe the media is biased. Anyone who doesn’t see this is paying scant attention to reality, and those who fight reality lose. Reality is an undefeated champion.
