For our first study on increasing preschool attendance (pre-COVID) called "Show Up to Grow Up" or SUGU, our research team employed novel measures of parental beliefs and attitudes at the time, including time preference. https://lnkd.in/gJttb2dD We have used these measures throughout many subsequent studies. In SUGU, we find our intervention increased attended days by 2.5 (0.15 standard deviations) and decreased chronic?absenteeism?by 9.3 percentage points (20%) over an 18-week period. Our results suggest that the treatment impact is stronger among those in the bottom?quantiles?of the attendance distribution. Novel survey measures collected at baseline suggest that SUGU made the importance of preschool more salient to parents who initially reported lower expectations for attendance, weaker beliefs about the importance of attendance to their children’s development, and higher present bias.?Our new work to address modern barriers to school attendance is under way!
The Behavioral Insights and Parenting Lab | The University of Chicago is proud to be among the grantees in the Overdeck Family Foundation research initiative to identify post-pandemic drivers of chronic absenteeism and solutions to address this persistent problem. Excited to join this great cohort of scholars and extend our groundbreaking study published in 2021: https://lnkd.in/gJttb2dD. https://lnkd.in/gGaSBfZb
