It's truly heartbreaking to see the devastation brought by Hurricane Helene. In response, the National Council on Independent Living established the NCIL Disaster Relief Fund. This fund provides essential support to the Centers for Independent Living (CILs) and Statewide Independent Living Councils (SILCs) affected by disasters, helping them repair or rebuild facilities, replace equipment, and assist their communities. Thanks to the generosity of NCIL members and allies, this fund has been sustained since 2005, with 100% of donations going directly to support centers in need. People with disabilities are disproportionately impacted by disasters, and without prompt assistance, their safety, health, and independence are at serious risk. A donation can help: ? Provide emergency relief for Independent Living Centers ? Supply critical resources and services to individuals with disabilities ? Ensure a swift and effective response when future disasters occur Every contribution, no matter how small, makes a meaningful difference. Society’s Assets has donated as a company. If you wish to support the NCIL Disaster Relief Fund, please use this link to donate: https://bit.ly/47wtFYH If you have any questions, feel free to reach out to Jenny at [email protected]. Hurricane Helene has wrecked the South East United States. From FL and GA to SC, NC, and beyond, this storm will forever be remembered as one of the most deadly in our country's history. Hurricanes affect beach communities, not mountain communities. This isn't supposed to happen in the mountains to cities like Asheville, NC. Except, perhaps, once every 1000 years. That's what Asheville, NC and surrounding communities now face, that 1 in a 1000 year event. Roads washed away. Entire towns like Chimney Rock, NC swept off the mountainside. Residents left with nothing - no power, no cell service, no water, dwindling food. This is personal. Members of Cattie & Gonzalez can tell you stories of years past when hurricanes have altered our lives. Victims have endured devastating losses, primarily by people lacking the means to rebuild. For some, they will be starting life all over again from square one. This GoFundMe is an attempt to help.?As citizens of the United States, we are resilient and steadfast in our desire to help others in the face of overwhelming adversity. Now, more than ever, our strength lies in our solidarity, our fortitude, and our willingness to help one another when facing a time of need. When our neighbors need help, we lend a helping hand. It's what we do. Cattie & Gonzalez wants to help! We will donate all proceeds received to the?NC Disaster Relief Fund. Donations made to the North Carolina Disaster Relief Fund will go to nonprofits working to meet the immediate needs of storm victims such as food and water, cleaning supplies and other emergency supplies. #HurricaneHelene #NorthCarolina #GoFundMe https://lnkd.in/emcB3JBa

Friends - please don't just move on to the next news story. Hurricane Helene has absolutely devastated western North Carolina. Because this storm didn't hit a major US city, it's not getting the same coverage as many prior hurricanes. But for western North Carolina, Helene brought 500-year floods and utter devastation. Entire towns remain cut off from the "mainland" due to flooding and the complete destruction of roadways. Not only are volunteer pilots bringing in supplies and water by helicopter and small plane, but they are now using mules to reach the most vulnerable areas. 18 water systems are completely offline, affecting almost 200,000 people. That means a lack of fresh water for almost five full days at this point. Another 225,000 people are served by water systems operating on backup power, some of which are at less that full capacity. (Source: Business North Carolina.) Asheville Mission Health Hospital is bringing in 20 trucks of water per day just for hospital needs. This is a humanitarian crisis for our neighbors. Research tells us that philanthropic dollars are not distributed across the country by relative population. Rather, philanthropic dollars are disproportionately distributed to our larger cities and population centers. Now is the time to fly in the face of that data. PLEASE, if you are of the ability to donate, help our neighbors by doing so. If you're not sure where to look, here's information on the specific disaster relief fund being run by the North Carolina Community Foundation: https://lnkd.in/eaZPDbiA

Hurricane Helene brought severe damage across the southeastern United States, with many communities still struggling to restore basic services such as power and running water. Thousands of our colleagues and their families here at GE Vernova call Florida, Georgia, the Carolinas and other impacted areas their home, and we are thankful for the many employee-led efforts to rally around these communities, such as donation drives and efforts to pack up supplies to be deployed to these areas. No one should face this challenging time alone.?As the response continues to help those impacted, we announced today that the GE Vernova Foundation is donating $500,000 to relief efforts - $250,000 to the American Red Cross to support immediate response efforts for #HurricaneHelene, and another $250,000 to be deployed as the communities begin to rebuild. You can read more on today’s announcement at the link below. Our thoughts are with all of those affected as well as those in the path of Hurricane Milton as it approaches the Florida coast. #FutureOfEnergy #GEVernovaFoundation #DisasterRelief

I'm deeply saddened by the devastation caused by Hurricane Helene in the southern Appalachians. The loss of lives and destruction of homes and entire communities is truly heartbreaking. As we come together to support flood victims, remember that every gesture of kindness and compassion can make a difference. For those looking to help, a list of organizations aiding in the recovery efforts can be found here: [Link to organizations aiding in Hurricane Helene recovery efforts](https://lnkd.in/euUX38Uf). And here are some essential reminders for those who want to assist: ??Volunteering: Sign up with a reputable organization and never go to a disaster area alone. ?? Donations: Financial support is crucial as it allows for the purchase of supplies and services needed most urgently. ?? Supplies: Contact organizations beforehand to determine what, how much, and when supplies are needed. Severe natural disasters are having an increasingly profound impact across Appalachians communities. Together, we can support these communities as they rebuild and improve resilience by restoring the natural systems that help mitigate the most serious impacts of a changing climate.

In the early days following catastrophes such as those brought on by Helene, many of us outside of the disaster areas share a combination of gratitude for it avoiding the places we live and work mixed with survivor’s guilt, a desire to help mixed with confusion as to how, and joy for those who are ok mixed with sadness for those who are not. If you are outside of an impact area, here are some of the best ways to help: Stay out: Avoid the temptation to witness the devastation first-hand. Let the professionals and official volunteer organizations have all the room they need to operate and avoid unwittingly, needlessly putting yourself and others in danger. Donate: Financial donations to reputable organizations (like the Red Cross, local shelters, or community organizations) that are involved in disaster relief can be very impactful. Stay informed: Local news organizations are far better for accurate, less sensationalized information. Here is a link to an excellent article from Asheville, NC’s Citizen Times on what to do and what not to do to help: https://lnkd.in/eW2yA3aJ Stay prepared: If nothing else, please remember these 2 things. 1) There is no such thing as a local catastrophe. All of us are or will be impacted in some way. 2) Catastrophe can strike anywhere at anytime to anyone, so be prepared and be a good neighbor to others now because one day it could be you.
