At this year's Midwest Traffic Safety Conference, we assisted with crash testing and captured excellent demonstrations of pedestrian kinematics. When analyzing pedestrian and bicycle collisions, it's crucial to determine the pedestrian's kinematic trajectory by thoroughly examining the scene, vehicle, and injury evidence. This testing would not have been possible without the generous contributions of Northwestern University Center for Public Safety, ILLINOIS TRUCK ENFORCEMENT ASSOCIATION LTD/Midwest Center For Traffic Safety, Napars, Gregory Russell, Hillside Towing (Arlington Heights), and G&D Trucking, Inc./ Hoffman Transportation, LLC (Channahon).

Our research concentrates on operator perception response and reaction times to immediate and non-immediate hazards including recognition, and response choices.

My takeaway from this is that regardless of the vehicle type, there's a consistent correlation between the pedestrian's throw distance and the vehicle's speed. A few years back, I compiled all the pedestrian crash test data I could find and compared projection trajectories (pushed pedestrians) to wrap trajectories (pedestrian that wrapped over the bonnet or hood). On average, pedestrians were thrown one additional foot in a projection trajectory compared to a wrap trajectory when all studies were averaged. I'm curious about your findings. Lastly, despite encouraging attendees not to groan or ooh, I believe it's a natural reaction.

Thank you for making the event a success! Let’s do it again next year November 4-6, 2025.
