#Research is a creative process, and learning is a social activity. Our inter-university teaching project “Art as a Means of Historical Inquiry” combines these two values by bringing together #historians from the #UniversityofZurich and #artists from the #ZurichUniversityoftheArts (#ZHdK) around practical assignments, and by encouraging conceptual, exploratory and multi-media approaches to historical research. In our class this spring, students explore various ways of observing, questioning and analyzing that are shaped by different media. What is an #archive? What interests and power relations have left their mark on the records of the past? How do our possibilities as artists and historians change when we tap into new tools and media? The didactical methods developed as part of this project should encourage students to situate the #humanities in a wider epistemic space characterized by unequal historical experiences and cultures of knowledge. I'm honored that this project has been awarded an #Open_InnovationGrant, and I can't wait to bring it to the classroom with my wonderful Co-Teachers Nina Willimann and Mayumi Arai from #ZHdK! https://willimannarai.net/

Thinking about museum collections, the messages they send, the way they are used to promote concepts and narratives that are biased and misleading. I've posted about this before, but it is still the case that when you go to the Centers & Institutes page for the University of St. Thomas and click on the link for the American Museum of Asmat Art - you don't get to go to a page dedicated to that entity - try it... https://lnkd.in/guwEXCs You end up elsewhere at the Visual Arts at St. Thomas - which is all about the art history department. The Association of Academic Museums and Galleries recommends that museums are not placed under the authority of one department, but rather be under the university as a whole. This is to discourage conflict of interest - like having a department use the museum to promote itself... In an academic setting using collections this way messages that the source or the culture that produced the objects is secondary - not the real focus. . . something that can be used to promote or draw attention to something else. That's not a good lesson to teach.

This lecture is a part of my effort as an art historian and an academic to foster ways of looking at visual histories through so-called niche perspectives. It was first delivered at AUD in the SOAS faculty lecture series. With some additions, it was later presented at "Imagining Asian Art in Transition: Symposium on Modern and Contemporary Asian Art" at USM, Penang. Another edited version was presented at XII International Conference on Critical Education, 3-6 July 2024, at Ankara University. As a scholar who is invested in decolonial methodologies, the repetition of the topic is intentional. The process of decolonization and nurturing of Global Art Histories is the most pressing need for the discipline. Presenting the lecture to a diverse audience globally allows me to initiate a dialogue locally at various regional venues, where it can be further explored, especially on an undergrad level. Because the process of critical thinking should start early. The final version of this lecture would be published in the ADAC Research Journal of UHE.

Happy to contribute to the latest issue of Dichotomy Student Journal UDM SACD with my article, 'From Social Condensers to Microrayons'. In this essay I explore microrayons as places for gathering while comparing them to Ginzburg’s social condensers, something I mention a lot in my writing. This was an opportunity to further explore some of the ideas I have already touched upon in my thesis. Here's a small excerpt: "The architectural world is oversaturated with buzz terms like building a community or promoting social interaction, but nowhere has it been taken so literally as in the Soviet Union. After the revolution and adoption of socialist form of governance they had the task of developing a new typology for a new type of society with a completely new set of ideals. Now a space for gathering was needed. Soviet Constructivists described it as a social condenser - a structure that would help its residents to embody the socialist ideals, shedding the old hierarchies and promoting personal development. However, investigating Soviet-era housing in Post-Soviet states, more specifically microrayons, it seems like they are more for passing through than lingering. So what happened to the idea of socially equitable spaces? Were ideological errors or execution at fault?" You can read the full issue here: https://lnkd.in/dpJCZE_F
