Imagine following hundreds of young people from birth through their school years, adolescence, and into adulthood. What might you learn? Dr. Deborah Vandell and her colleagues did just that using data from the groundbreaking longitudinal Study of Early Child Care and Youth Development (SECCYD).? They found enduring and meaningful impacts of early learning and afterschool programs that compounded over time. In short, by age 26, people who participated in afterschool activities earned more money and degrees and were healthier and more civically engaged. Last week, I had the privilege of joining a panel discussion hosted by Rebecca Goldberg and Grantmakers for Education's Out-of-School Time Impact Group. Gratitude to Dr. Vandell, Suzette Harvey and Ursula Helminski for their wisdom and insights!
