I have been running our startup incubator for about 7 years. It has taken many shapes and forms. It was started before I launched my venture firm Shadow Ventures and it had morphed over the years. We put it on pause last year to reformulate what made sense based on our strengths and based on building a sustainable model for both the startups and for me. It also needed to align with my core mission. “Leading Change, Building Futures”. What’s my strength? - I have started and scaled startups over the last 30 years. - While I don’t write code anymore, I understand technology trends and have seen a lot. - I grew up in and was an AEC professional. - I am VERY connected within the AEC industry. - My core job is being a VC. What does the AEC Industry need? - Not all startups are venture fundable. That’s ok, they still need help with PMF. - Educate non-AEC tech founders on the opportunities and approach to being successful. - Educate AEC professionals on how to build a successful tech company (whether VC fundable or not) - Firms beyond the ENR500 need exposure to the latest technologies. - Mentorship and advice from successful entrepreneurs, investors and customers. - A platform for customer discovery (it’s a very fragmented market). To my early founders and VC friends,?Auren Hoffman ???(badass multi-time founder and executive) put together a really interesting perspective about pitching to VCs, and I'm curious to get your thoughts. His hot take: * Start with Product (what the heck is your product, what does it do) * Then slide into Traction * Then vision (imagine a world ...) * Then market (how big is this world ... today and tomorrow) * Then Objections My take ... I love this because the product wins ... if your product sucks, I don't care how great your marketing is or how much inbound you've gotten; your product will win in the long run. Do you know how many startups have died (not raised more $$ in the last few years) because they spent too much on hiring and building out GTM to try and compete, but they lost sight of building what the market NEEDED? I also love how he suggests to 'anticipate objections' ... HECK YES you need to do this ... ask yourself why they SHOULDN'T invest in you ... why might you not win ... why now might not be the right time ... Finally, I'd add a bit about the team, but not the typical 'look at all of the amazing companies our team came from' but instead focus on why you're going to WIN with this team. One last thought: remember, don't pitch. Pitching it talking AT people ... have a conversation because that's inclusive, and in conversations, you tell stories, so don't forget your origin story (which you could slot in right after product) #tellstoriesdontpitch

Remember your value and tell them. That is the question that investors, customers, potential partners, candidates and many others are trying to uncover when they decide to work with you. Yes the product or resume looks good but talk about your value and make sure they hear it loud and clear. Recently I was asked, “what are the top questions you hear from early stage founders?” ?? Well.. there’s a lot. Starting a company comes with A TON of questions. By the time founders get to our programs, we notice the following questions often bubble up: ? How do I attract new partnerships and THEN create fair terms that benefit both parties? ?How do I get my current users to pay for my product or service? ?How can I effectively pitch to investors? While there are several tactical answers to these questions that we work to embed into our fellowship programming, one key answer stood out to me after listening to one of our Go To Market Coaches, Amirah Raveneau-Bey, facilitate a session around Strategic Partnerships. She emphasized the importance of remembering your value ? . This has stuck with me the past few days. A good lesson as a builder and as a person. When creating partnership agreements, think through: ?? What value do I bring to this partner? And, what value do they add to me? ?? How do I develop parameters that leverage the value offered from both sides? When working on customer acquisition strategies: ?? What value do I bring to this customer? ?? How can I prove to them that this value is worth paying for? When pitching to investors: ?? What value(s) do I want them to see? ?? What are their interests and how does my value align with those? Remembering your value can be hard, especially when you’re chasing partnerships, customers, and investors.
