Hey LinkedIn network ?? Soon, I'll be starting the job hunt to land my first role as a product designer. It's scary, it's exciting, and it's going to be really quite tough. The past 6 months haven't been an easy ride for juniors, but I'm hopeful that the rejections will build resilience, and I'll eventually land a role meant for me. I really love how open and supportive the London design community is. Last night I headed to Planes Studio and listened to a fabulous panel share their experiences and top tips on breaking into digital product design. ? Highlights Liz Hamburger ?? reminded us to keep asking questions. Take a step back and ask yourself ‘Do I really understand this?’ If you don’t, keep asking questions until you do (within reason of course!) A good question is an excellent way to show passion and dedication. Ben Elliott encouraged us to keep going. Landing your first role in product design is incredibly difficult, but interviews are practice even if you don’t land the role, and rejections are an inevitable part of the process that builds up your resilience. Marisa Jensen highlighted the importance of building up a network. One of the key ways to get better at something is by learning from people who are better than you. Venessa Bennett reminded us not to take things personally when receiving rejections or constructive feedback. These are all part of the process, and they don't define you. Thank you Sophie Rahier for hosting! There were many more brilliant nuggets of advice, but I tend to make my LinkedIn posts way too long, so I’ll leave it there! Be sure to check out future Runway events, I’ve loved meeting other product designers from all levels and am super grateful communities like this exist. #productdesign #juniordesigners #breakingintoproductdesign

Jobs are great for learning the fundamentals, but if you’re a designer with ambition, you need to seek out challenges beyond your day-to-day work. This is because, as a designer, you’re often restricted to the business aim and goals, making it challenging to fully explore new ideas in that environment. One way of getting around this is working on side projects and hustles, which are great ways to refine and gain new skills. These are the playgrounds for unrestricted creativity, where you can fully explore new tools and approaches that lead to some amazing ideas, products and experiences. It’s through these personal projects that you’ll truly boost your growth and stand out in the design world. Growth is a choice. Let's choose to explore! #UXDesign #ProductDesign #CareerDevelopment #DesignThinking

I've been sending out applications for 2 months now, and I've only managed to land 1 interview! Considering how competitive the job market is, I expected more responses by now. People often say you need to stand out from the crowd, but I've always struggled with that concept. How can I create my own brand when I lack experience? ?? Back in university, studying architecture, I remember admiring my professors' sketches. Each had their own unique style, while my work felt like a chaotic jumble. When I graduated, I compared my final design project with one I had received an F on. It was then that I realized it was time to start crafting my own brand (not that I was an expert, but there was potential). ?? With this mindset, I doubted I could achieve the same in UX design, as I hadn't studied it at university. However, stumbling upon Ricardo Brito and watching Chris Do's videos on personal branding completely shifted my perspective! While senior designers may develop their branding more quickly and intricately, it doesn't mean juniors can't do the same. Now, I'm scribbling a single word in my notebook and underlining it three times: "STORYTELLING." I have some experience, a mindset, and I've journeyed to reach this point. I have a story to tell! ? #JobSearch #ProfessionalGrowth #CareerJourney #BrandBuilding #UXDesign #Storytelling

As designers, it’s easy to overlook the small wins, especially when we’re focused on the big goals. But those little steps—like learning a new tool, finishing a case study, or nailing down a personal project—are what really build momentum. If you’re still on the job hunt, remember that every skill you sharpen, every project you complete, and every piece of feedback you get is a step closer to where you want to be. Celebrate those small wins! They’re proof you’re growing and moving forward, one step at a time. #design #career #job

Design Career Ladder EXPLAINED. Career ladders in design have long been mysterious. ?? Every company scratches their heads and comes up with something new, further confusing the Product Design/UX role. And at least half of us don’t even know exactly what product designers do. Even more of us don’t know what a career can look like. Why do we do this to ourselves. ?? It's especially tough for designers, which already face inconsistent definitions and evaluations. I’ve collected dozens of career ladders from big companies to startups (Figma, LinkedIn, Zendesk and more), and I’m going to share the high-level frameworks of how 10+ companies structure their product design role: → Titles at each level → Attributes/competencies/skills they evaluate for → Where the IC and manager tracks split → A handful of public career ladders → What it takes to be hired and promoted Read more in the link in comment. What are your 2c on design career ladders? #leadership #design #careers #creativity

It's disheartening to hear countless stories of junior designers finding themselves trapped in roles that resemble more of a developer's job rather than the creative, design-focused position they signed up for. Here are some crucial steps to take if you find yourself in this situation: Review Your Offer Letter and Contract: Always ensure you thoroughly understand the terms of your employment to avoid any surprises down the road. Open Dialogue with HR or Manager: Have a candid conversation about your expectations versus the reality of your daily tasks and responsibilities. Emphasize that you applied for a designer's role. Consider Your Options: If the situation remains unchanged, don't hesitate to explore other opportunities. While it may seem daunting, staying true to your career aspirations is essential in the long run. Remember, it's better to be proactive and ask questions about the role before committing. Your career growth and satisfaction matter! If you're facing similar challenges or have questions, feel free to reach out to me directly. Let's navigate this journey together. Here's to meaningful and fulfilling design careers! ??? #DesignCareer?#CareerAdvice?#uiux?#uiuxdesign?#UXDesign?#UIDesign?
