According to a new survey from CVN, the most common words civilians use to describe veterans are courageous/brave (27%) and hero/heroic (13%). Yet, only a fraction of veterans (2% and 1%) would use those words to describe themselves. How would YOU describe veterans in one word? A 5 Star review A MUST-READ FOR VETERANS AND CIVILIANS ALIKE!!!!! To my astonishment, Mr. Neckels has now made me a supporter of both sides. How ironic this story conveys a truly difficult choice and life from either perspective. Matter of Conscience Bruce Neckels https://lnkd.in/gwchS5k2 #warstories #bruceneckels #moviestar #bookstoread

Can resilience be taught or is it an innate aspect of our being? Fascinating discussion. Disclaimer: I am 100% biased here, as I am a fan of Prof Dan Ariely and of resilience! #resilience?#mindset?#danariely #behaviors #psychology #traits #civilians #veterans
I do research in behavioral economics and try to describe it in plain language. These findings have enriched my life, and my hope is that they will do the same for you.
When 83% of civilians wanted to take a narcotic to manage their pain, only 32% of veterans opted to do likewise. Was it because veterans were in less actual pain? Likely not... So are we in control of how we perceive pain? One of the most interesting lessons we have learned on this subject comes from Henry K. Beecher In his 1956 study of pain in military veterans and civilians, Beecher showed how important it is to understand how people interpret the meaning of their injuries. These interpretations, he argued, can shape the way we experience trauma and pain. Beecher found that veterans rated their pain less intensely than did civilians with comparable wounds. These differences depended not on the severity of the wounds- But on how individuals experienced them. Veterans tended to wear injuries as a badge of honor and patriotism; Civilians were more likely to see injuries just as unfortunate events that befell them. The more we interpret events as the outcome of something that we did, rather than something done to us, The better our attitude and recovery. This lesson, while very important for traumatic injuries, Also applies to the small bumps of daily life. #resilience #mindset #danariely

As we honor the sacrifices of those who have fought for our country, we reflect on their fight for our freedom and democracy on this Veterans Day. We’d like to thank all veterans for not only their service and dedication to our country, but for protecting our freedoms and inspiring us in our work everyday. #VeteransDay#Veterans#HonoringourVeterans#USA #USGovernment#Government#GovernmentContracting#GovCon#Twenty39

Weak military leaders are the largest problem in the military. We have a trillion dollar annual budget, the best young talent, and the best training facilities on the planet. But we will continue to fail if we systemically create weak leadership. Military evaluations are more about pleasing your boss than demonstrating performance. Over 40 years, what this does, is create people pleasing leaders devoid of any ability to push back when the military members need courageous leadership the most. DEI is only one symptom of the larger problem; weak leaders validated in a system desperately needing reform. Turning the military organization into a winning organization again will not only require firing a lot of the current general officer generation, but it also requires reforming the system that allowed them to be weak in the first place.
Conviction into Action: I prepare leaders of moral conviction to awaken it in their lives and leadership.
There has been a 35% reduction in conservative veterans willing to encourage young people to join the military. Any CEO that managed such a trust crisis would have been fired long ago. Via The Wall Street Journal https://lnkd.in/g5-Y7ti7
