The United States ranks poorly in maternal and fetal health compared to other developed nations. Among 11 high-income countries, including Australia, Canada, France, Germany, the Netherlands, New Zealand, Norway, Sweden, Switzerland, and the United Kingdom, the U.S. has the highest maternal mortality rate and is the only country without guaranteed access to provider home visits or paid parental leave in the postpartum period. Maternal mortality in the U.S. occurs at an average rate of 17.2 deaths per 100,000 live births, which is significantly higher than the rates in countries like the Netherlands, Norway, and New Zealand, where it is 3 or fewer per 100,000 live births. The United States also has a relative undersupply of maternity care providers, such as midwives and obstetrician-gynecologists (OB-GYNs), compared to other countries where midwives often play a crucial role in managing normal pregnancies and improving outcomes for mothers and babies. Furthermore, the U.S. is the only high-income country that does not guarantee paid leave to mothers after childbirth, whereas other nations provide at least 14 weeks of paid leave or more. This combination of factors contributes to the U.S. ranking as one of the worst among developed countries in terms of maternal care and outcomes. Honestly, we suck at this and we can do better. Maybe if we spent more time in actual initiatives than navigating corrupt healthcare and big pharma crap it would happen... You are all thinking it, I just say it. #healthcare #innovation #maternalhealth #dobetter #corrupt

We applaud Arkansas Governor Sarah Sanders and the new executive order issued aimed at tackling the state's maternal and infant health crisis. This is a commendable step towards the overall goal of healthy moms and healthy babies. The creation of the Arkansas Strategic Committee for Maternal Health and the immediate actions outlined in the order demonstrate a proactive approach to addressing this critical issue. By fostering collaboration between policymakers, health care professionals and community stakeholders, we can implement effective solutions that improve accessibility, affordability, adoptability and quality in health care. Through initiatives like this, we can create a healthier, more prosperous future for all residents of the heartland. https://lnkd.in/gHXJTjCB

Ann E Holder, #maranihealth CEO is in the house. She and the entire team at Marani Health is on a mission to advocate for women and women's health. When we spoke to an investor recently, about the need to transform maternal health, a question was posed, 'does it need transforming?' I almost fell off my chair. #maternalmortality has been rising steadily in the US. +40% increase from 2021 vs 2020 by CDC (almost at the bottom of the list for top 10 industrialized countries, ;( ) When a woman dies in #pregnancy, #childbirth, or the #postpartum period, it means there is a child who will never know his or her mother. There is a tremendous sense of loss, grief, fear, and blame, as well as new, unexpected responsibility for the other parent and the family’s extended community. The ripple effect of one woman's life. 84% of pregnancy related deaths are #preventable Marani Health is there for women and their care providers, at #PREGNANCY, #CHILDBIRTH, and at #POSTPARTNUM period. #communityvoice #community Please consider joining the webinar. My two colleagues, Lindsay du Plessis, DrPH, MPH and Kendra L. Smith, Ph.D. will lead the discussion. All the webinars in this series are available here https://lnkd.in/g2NxrUN. We initiated the series in May of 2023. All webinars have associated slide decks - start there if you’d like. From our “Hospital Action Guide for Respectful and Equitable Obstetrical Care”: “Community engagement presents a valuable avenue for supporting quality improvement efforts, contributing to enhanced health outcomes, respectful care, equitable service delivery, and community empowerment. It involves collaborative efforts with diverse groups to address well-being concerns and achieve sustainable results. The term 'community' encompasses a wide array of individuals, including patients, those with specific health conditions, caregivers, interest groups, people from particular geographic regions, professionals like nurses and doulas, and individuals who share common identities or attributes. Despite its potential to enhance quality improvement, community engagement can often be misunderstood, superficially addressed, and insufficiently integrated into quality improvement policies and practices. This module seeks to elucidate the significance of community engagement in the context of quality improvement and respectful care, pinpoint opportunities for engagement, and provide essential skills for leveraging these opportunities effectively.” (Module 6)
