Today, I had the pleasure of spending time with some of our incredible young girls at Neander and our conversation was nothing short of powerful. We went deep into topics that matter, things that will shape their futures and can resonate with girls across the globe. ?? The Power of Vision: We talked about how having a vision is the cornerstone of creating a bright future. I encouraged them to dream big and never be afraid to chart their own path. Vision gives direction, and it’s that clarity that will light their way toward achieving greatness. ??? The Importance of Speaking Out: We also discussed the importance of using their voice—whether it’s to share ideas, express emotions, or stand up for what’s right. In a world where silence can be a barrier, I reminded them that their voice is their superpower. It holds the potential to inspire change and command respect. ?? Embracing Their Superpowers : Finally, we explored the idea of embracing their unique strengths—whether it’s kindness, intelligence, creativity, or resilience. Each girl has her own superpower that makes her extraordinary, and it’s time to recognize that these qualities can move mountains. Embracing who they are will lead them to uncover their full potential. These conversations aren’t just for today; they are stepping stones to brighter futures, not just for these young girls, but for all girls around the world. Shattering the Illusion: A Mother's Journey to Bridge the Dream Gap Living in the fascinating world of a bright-eyed, 5-year-old girl, I've come to appreciate the hurdles our little ones leap over in today's society. A concern that's been echoing in my heart is the Dream Gap. This Dream Gap is a silent canyon dividing boys and girls, a gap in their self-belief and potential. Studies unveil that by their fifth birthday, many girls start soaking up societal cues that they're a step behind boys, especially in realms like science, math, and leadership. This shatters me, as I watch my daughter's eyes sparkle with dreams of exploring galaxies or healing people. As guardians of their dreams, it's our duty to show our children that their potential is boundless. Yet, it's a tough path. We are consistently wrestling with stereotypes and prejudices, both glaring and hidden, that dictate what our girls can or cannot achieve. These messages infiltrate their lives, from the toys we buy them to the characters they admire on screen. But we are not defenseless. Here's how we're taking a stand at home to bridge the Dream Gap: Sparking Curiosity: From constructing Lego masterpieces to dabbling in elementary science projects, we delve into a wide spectrum of interests. Every dream is worthy. Role Models: We share tales of awe-inspiring women across the globe. Our reading time is filled with stories of female pioneers, leaders, and adventurers. Positive Reinforcement: We cheer for her feats, big and small, and egg her on. Confidence is a staircase, built one step at a time. Challenging Stereotypes: When we stumble upon a stereotype, we discuss, dissect, and debunk it. We emphasize that she can conquer anything she pursues, regardless of naysayers. Inclusive Play: We offer toys and activities that reject conventional gender roles, nurturing her freedom to pursue her passions without judgment. Together, we can bridge the Dream Gap and pave the way for our daughters to grow in a world where their dreams are not tethered to their gender. Everyone of every age should care about ageism. When you’re in your 20’s and 30’s, you’re not thinking about how people over 40 are perceived at work. In fact, you might even find yourself commiserating with your peers about how “out of touch” your senior peers are (whether it’s valid or not). To say that our culture has a tendency to idealize youth and vilify aging would be an understatement. It’s true that generations of folks can see the world very differently. That can be a great thing! Join the fight against ageism now. ??Seek out opportunities to collaborate with peers of all generations. ??Encourage mentorship and reverse mentorship at your organization. ??Advocate for fair hiring and promotion practices. Hopefully, someday, you too, will make it past 50. Start making the world a better place for your future self!

We are complicit. Especially in this era where every like, save, share, and ever-slightly-too-long linger tells the algorithm ‘serve me more of this.’ In Next Gen Men's instance, positive masculinities never trends at scale because we’re so set to click on toxic masculinity’s enraging headlines. Think about ‘Jordan Peterson DESTROYS Feminist’ vs. ‘Man does good thing’ – you may even roll your eyes at the second thinking “why do we even praise men for doing the bare minimum”…leaving the first one to get all the engagement. If we want to give boys & men good role models, we must highlight the people and paths that lead there. Engage less with those that don’t.

A message to all LinkedIn posters I originally was going to post this as a comment on someone else's post, but I ran out of characters. Like you, LinkedIn is flooding me with suggested posts penned by individuals whose beliefs and attitudes are anathema to my own. I can't dismiss these as fringe views (given their number) and I often see these posts liked by individuals who should be culturally offended by the posts. In some cases I have reconsidered maintaining contacts as connections - ok I have unfollowed one or two. It has however led me now for some time to try to reconcile the crossroads at which our society (and world) now stands. As a Gen Xer, I had grasped onto the hope that through education, greater freedoms to people tormented by dictatorial leaders and greater equality we would be become a kinder and more understanding world. But as a maturing adult I have become increasingly aware that humans, in the main, are more concerned about their own individual circumstances and for those that are fortunate, manipulative or even forceful, maintaining the privileges which perpetuate their wealth and power. So back to the crossroads – the last twenty or thirty years have seen some of those privileges breakdown, religion has had a lesser role to play in western cultures (perhaps the opposite in others), workplaces have groaned and creaked to elevate women, and less so, people of diverse ethnic cultures into leadership positions. People have felt safer (but not safe) about living authentic lives and disability has begun to be supported across the community. I understand this has caused discomfort to many and dislocation to others. For some people with certain beliefs, it must seem that the world is difficult to understand and reconcile. But that is life, it is hard, it is confronting, and it is a slog. When we discourse in public it is incumbent that we respect the opinions of those we argue against. We do not create a better existence by taking someone down, disempowering them or dismissing their struggle for truth. The baby boomer generation – custodians of the world they helped create, need to shepherd the next generations to good leadership. They need not stand to the death to defend their beliefs or resist change, but give the benefit of their experience to help mold the current consensus. Not everything is right in the world, and it is unlikely to ever be, but let’s support the people with energy for improvement, justice and those searching for truth.

Myth: If you’re a woman, you must want to spend more time with your family than at work post having kids. We are all individual and unique. We all possess different values. My kids matter. One helluva lot. But so does my career. And it always will. My values speak to both. As do the values of so many out there. In the same way that the values of some fathers out there will align to spending more time with family after having kids. SO WITH EVERYONE WANTING DIFFERENT THINGS, HOW DO WE SOLVE FOR ALL Simple… Ask, don’t assume. Be curious. Lean in. Understand your people. And NOT just the mothers. ALL parents! And importantly, if you share a lived experience, set it aside so it doesn’t colour your perception of the experience another lives. DEI is about understanding individual needs. Be a good human. Ask.
