I sat on the floor, sobbing, and packing up the desk we'd just organized. Of all the outcomes possible, this was *not* one I'd thought of. I had been recruited into this executive director role about a year ago to take over a school that was in a 'the plane is on fire and we need you to fix the plane without landing it or letting the passengers know it's on fire' type situation. We limped through the last couple months of the school year, summer break came, and I got to work. I.... ?? Removed hierarchy from the org design and created a circular team ?? Filled all empty positions & revised the pay structure for teachers (that hadn't been changed in *years*) ?? Started the work to get the school ready for state licensing and for accreditation ?? Built a solid team of directors to help me lead the school of 250 kids and 75 teachers ?? and the hundreds of other things that happen when taking over a failing business. Later into thay school year, not too long after our first successful licensing inspection, and finally starting to see the fruits of our labor, Covid happened. The school shut down temporarily- then permanently. *Cue Chelsea sobbing in a hallway* The blood, sweat, and tears (and glitter) we put into the school would never be fully realized. We had all the pieces in a row and were just seeing sustainable results and promising changes.... then I'm cleaning out desks and getting on LinkedIn because that's what people do, I suppose. I didn't know it then, but what enabled me to navigate all the stages we took the staff and families of that school through (from new leadership to Covid online school)- was strategic, psychologically safe, communication. I've done it for 12 of the most amazing businesses and schools since then and I now run a business based on this obsession. Whatever challenge you're taking on - don't underestimate strategic communication. #AutisticResearcher #ActuallyAutistic

Do you know about the "Marshmallow challenge"? It's a bit long read, but worth your morning 5 minutes if you are interested in secrets of #high_performing_cultures Peter Skillman - designer and engineer, author of this experiment/challenge, over several months assembled a series of groups at Stanford, the University of California, the University of Tokyo and several other locations. He challenged each group to build the tallest possible structure using uncooked spaghetti, one yard of transparent tape, one yard of string and one marshmallow. the contest had only one rule: the marshmallow should be placed on top of the structure. And the most interesting part is not the task itself, but the participants: some of the groups consisted of business school students, the others - from ... kindergartners )) And look what happened: the business students began talking and thinking strategically, examined the materials, generated several ideas - all things professional, rational and intelligent. So they made a decision to pursue a specific strategy and started building. On the other hand, kindergartners did not strategize, analyze, ask questions, talk etc. They abruptly grabbed materials from one another and started building, with no plan or strategy. So which group do you think won the challenge? You would bet business students, right? ) Not exactly) In dozens if trials, kindergartners built structures almost 2 times taller, than business students did. The result is hard to absorb: we see smart, experienced business school students, and it's difficult to imagine they would produce a poor performance. The business school students appear to be collaborating, but in fact they are engaged in a process psychologists call status management. They are figuring out who is in charge? Is it okay to criticize someone's idea? What are the rules here? Their interactions seem smooth, but their underlying behavior is riddled with inefficiency, hesitation and subtle competition. Instead of focusing on the task, they are navigating their uncertainty about one another. They spend so much time managing the status that they fail to grasp the essence of the problem. The actions of the kindergartners appear disorganized on the surface. But a deeper view clarifies that they are not competing for status, they stand shoulder to shoulder and work energetically together. They move quickly, spotting problems and offering help. The kindergartners work TOGETHER in a SMARTER way. #performancemanagement #organisationalculture #marshmallowchallenge

Leader, Work Psychologist, Author & Speaker. Follow for posts about culture, leadership & making work human. Founder of Make It Human
?? One of the reasons I wrote Make It Human is because I believe we have a unique opportunity to upgrade our mission and experiences of work. ?? As humans we’re caught in between an era gone by and a new one, trying to begin. ???? There’s certainly motivation to move to something different and acknowledgement that things need to change. 84% of CEOs say their culture is not where it needs to be (Economist, 2024). More people than ever have opted to go it alone, setting up small businesses or acting on an entrepreneurial spirit, searching for meaning and balance. ? However, across teams and workplaces, we’re not sure HOW to move to something better, more fulfilling, more sustainable and impactful for people AND business. ?? We have the research, insights, and case stories to show us the path forward. Make It Human brings this to life in a practical vision and mission for cultivating team and workplace cultures where people and business thrive. ?? ?? I hope this helps us shape happier, healthier, more human experiences of work for us and the next generation to come, including my 8-year-old daughter. ?? When do we stop asking the question ‘Why’? ? Recently I was interrogated by my 3 year old nephew, he asked 'why' at least 10 times. He wasn’t willing to just accept that something was the way it was. It got me thinking why aren’t we all as curious as children? ? At what point do we just settle because it's what we're used to. At what point do we stop poking at the status quo to pose the question, "Can we do better?" ? One thing I love about the design world is that when we see something not working the way it should, the curious mind instinctively asks 'why'? ? Imagine applying this frame of thinking to others areas that seem to be, well not quite working. ? The return to office. A fair & equitable culture. Politics. ? During times of uncertainty, 'because it's always been this way' isn't good enough. To challenge is to grow. It's how we make sure that the future isn't just a repeat of the past but something new, exciting, and better for everyone. ? Next time you get that pang of doubt in your gut, but everyone is going along with it anyway, maybe stop and ask… ? Why? #curiosity #challengethestatusquo #designleadership

I produce learning experiences based on the wisdom of experts that deeply impact their communities/teams and strategically create leverage in their business.
What would happen if leaders and professionals were provided a private space to grapple with the complex issue of slavery? What if we took a break from group discussions, where personal views can unintentionally harm team trust? In honor of Juneteenth, I'm thrilled about the release of a game-changing digital workbook we've been brewing! It dares to ask: When we dialogue about race and equality at work, can we have a personal experience with the topic first, before a having a public one? The workbook is a private learning experience that’s based on a powerful short film called Another Slave Narrative by the talented Michelle Renee Jackson, MDiv of Simuel + Murray. In collaboration with Mycah Mason from Merkaba Tech and Portia Michele creator of The Cultivated Joy Experiment, this new, fresh perspective on how we approach DEI learning intends to set the stage for a more empathetic, understanding, and ultimately more inclusive workspace. Here's to a future where everyone is part of the narrative. Happy Juneteenth! #DEI #Learning #Development #Juneteenth

Empowering children and adults to lead, innovate, and transform their communities. Award-winning Author and International Speaker. Join our FREE ? "Raising a Successful, Innovative Child" conference
The Hidden Key to Breakthrough Ideas: Who You're Overlooking in Brainstorming ?? Innovation thrives on diversity, but I’m not talking about the diversity you are thinking about…. This is a different kind of diversity. One that is overlooked. It’s the diversity in age. Imagine a brainstorming session where a child's imaginative thinking meets the strategic insight of an experienced professional, and where the enthusiasm of young adults blends with the steady wisdom of seniors. Here’s why age diversity matters: 1. Fresh Perspectives from the Youngest Minds: Children see the world with unfiltered curiosity. Their questions can uncover new angles and challenge the status quo. A 5-year-old might ask, "Why can’t we do it this way?"—a question that sparks a completely new approach. 2. Wisdom from the Elders: Older adults bring a wealth of experience and historical knowledge. They can provide insights into what has worked in the past and why, helping to avoid pitfalls and refine ideas. 3. Bridging Generational Gaps: Different age groups often have varied approaches to problem-solving. Young adults may be tech-savvy and quick to adopt new trends, while middle-aged individuals often have practical, hands-on experience. Together, they can create well-rounded solutions. 4. Cultivating Empathy and Understanding: Working with a broad age range fosters empathy and understanding. This can lead to more inclusive and user-friendly innovations, as ideas are vetted through diverse lenses. 5. Creating a Rich Idea Ecosystem: When you mix the boundless imagination of youth with the seasoned perspectives of elders, you create a rich ecosystem where ideas can flourish. Each age group contributes uniquely, enriching the brainstorming process and leading to breakthrough innovations. Ready to unlock hidden innovation? Invite everyone to the table— from young children to 90-year-olds to create some magic. And if you can’t bring a 5-year-old to your session, connect with your inner child and let me know what a child would say about your business challenge. #successbydesign #brainstorming #innovativeideas
