11 years ago today, I was praying to be a Resident Assistant (RA) on campus at New Jersey Institute of Technology and that role completely changed my life and helped me form so many incredible relationships
. . it also gave me the capacity to live on campus for free for 2 years and helped me grow in ways that wouldn't have been possible if I was living at home . .
It allowed me to be more involved as Vice President of the Society of Hispanic Professional Engineers (SHPE) at NJIT and also gave me the capacity to work at the NJIT help-desk as an IT Technician; troubleshooting software, hardware, and networking issues for students, faculty, and staff.
Looking back, that help-desk role was crucial because I gained the technical experience I could leverage for future technical interviews on top of the leadership & relationship skills I was acquiring through my NJIT-SHPE & Resident Assistant roles.
I felt like being an RA and an IT Technician at the same time helped me gain a million stories about how to resolve conflict, adapt, communicate effectively cross-functionally, delegate, etc because every day there was literally something new going on with residents or with someone's device on campus lol
I've learned that life is full of similar opportunities that can be seen as asymmetric bets, where the potential upside far outweighs the risk or investment . .
The commitment and responsibility seemed so daunting at first to do all of these things while taking on 18 college credits (to graduate on time), but the rewards like personal growth, leadership skills, and community impact I experienced was life changing, and I still feel its effects till this today.
For anyone who's looking for what's next in their career, consider finding roles (even if its unrelated to what you actually studied in school) where the payoff can significantly exceed the initial risk; where the roles and responsibilities you take on allow you to leverage your time and efforts for greater returns in personal development, professional skills, and meaningful relationships ????
