We’ve worked with hundreds of instructors over the last year, and I can’t help but notice some common themes have emerged when it comes to the challenges of shifting their lab courses online. But there are solutions to those challenges! So if you’re on the fence about shifting your labs online, here is some key information that might help you make the leap. ??The kind of labs you use play a key role in quality and effectiveness. ??To replicate the quality and rigor of on-campus labs: ?Don’t rely 100% on virtual simulations. ?Use a mix of hands-on and virtual labs. ?Use QM-certified curriculum. ??Virtual labs and hands-on labs both have benefits in certain circumstances and should be used together. ??To incorporate both effectively: ?Use virtual simulations to introduce basic concepts, provide students with a low-stakes environment, and as pre-labs for on-campus labs. ?Use hands-on labs to build an engaging, interactive online lab experience that helps students apply concepts to the real world. ??When it comes to cost, it’s important to look at the full picture, especially when you consider the time and cost of on-campus labs for students, instructors and the institution. ??To keep costs balanced, consider: ?Hands-on labs at home mean students don’t have to commute, which saves them from paying for gas, childcare, etc. ?Mixing in virtual labs (not every lab has to be hands-on!) or shifting to open source textbooks for your lecture course. ??Safety doesn’t have to be a deal breaker. Choose a partner whose hands-on lab development and testing process is built around the fact that instructors are not present when students perform experiments. ??To set the expectation that safety is priority: ?Use lab safety lessons and training before students access course content. ?Always provide clear and in-depth instructions. ?Make sure students have PPE and instructions for handling lab equipment. ?Use small quantities of chemicals to enhance safety. This is just a handful of takeaways we’ve learned from our awesome Science Interactive community. If you’re offering labs online, what’s your biggest lesson learned? ?? #stemed #distanceed #onlinelabs

The most innovative program I've seen - and tested - at high school level ????♀? is about career connected learning. This is what Portal Learning offers as a service to schools - and companies- in the US. My own experience with Portal Learning at Minds Studio left me truly impressed, and I can't wait for you to see it in action in this video: https://lnkd.in/ej_4jYqb So, what exactly is Portal Learning? Portal Learning serves as a bridge between education and employment. It brings high school students and leading employers together, facilitating the development of career pathways that are vital for economic growth and increased income mobility for the next generation. What does Portal offer to schools? In the Portal Learning program, students get to engage in real-world projects alongside professionals. Essentially, it connects schools with companies to work on tangible projects, benefitting both the institutions and their students. And what does Portal offer to companies? Future talent. Forward-thinking employers tap into this program to engage with and nurture young talent. This not only inspires loyalty but also establishes early talent pipelines. But what's the payoff for students? Students get to immerse themselves in multi-week deep dive design challenges known as "Project Consults." These challenges are based on real-world problems that companies or professionals are grappling with. Students emerge from this experience with enhanced creative confidence and skills, while employers gain invaluable project leadership, insights, and even prototypes from a fresh student perspective. Last year, a group of students collaborated with Minds Studio on a project called "Cool Schools." The objective was to identify the key components that make a school "cool." If you're intrigued to learn more about this project, I highly recommend following Ivan Cestero and checking out his article: https://lnkd.in/ejNgwGaR Excitingly, we're continuing our partnership into 2024, further exploring what high school students find cool and engaging in the world of education. Stay tuned for more insights!

My 15 years in education have been a journey of revelation. As a former engineer from Mexico, I initially marveled at the resources available in American classrooms. However, the joy of teaching was overshadowed by mounting pressures on educators. I witnessed firsthand the struggles of colleagues burdened by an increasingly demanding system. Despite this, my analytical mindset led me to track student progress and uncover the power of data-driven instruction. Even before interactive whiteboards were commonplace, I created my own tools to personalize learning and ignite student engagement. Through simple measures like sharing personal stories and connecting learning to real-life experiences, I fostered a thriving classroom environment where students felt valued and motivated. These experiences have shaped my understanding of the complex challenges facing education today. While technology offers incredible potential, we must also recognize the importance of human connection, passion, and a balanced approach to life and work. It's crucial for educators to reconnect with their "muse"—the inspiration that fuels their dedication to teaching. Quizmybrainz is committed to supporting educators on this journey. We aim to provide the tools and resources necessary to spark creativity, reduce stress, and rediscover the joy of teaching. Together, let's embrace innovation, foster a love of learning, and empower both teachers and students to reach their full potential. Visit us at https://quizmybrainz.com

POV Is your classroom still stuck in the past? To truly engage today’s students, it’s essential to align with 21st-century practices. Over the past decade, we’ve seen significant shifts in education, including tech integration, flipped classroom methodology, inquiry-based learning, cooperative seating arrangements, and a focus on social-emotional learning (SEL) and nurturing the whole child. Traditional methods like “chalk and talk” and handing out packets are no longer effective. To connect with Generation Z, educators must embrace student-centered learning approaches and recognize that teachers are not the sole source of information. Emphasizing collaboration, critical thinking, and technology-driven learning experiences is key. #EdTech #21stCenturySkills #FlippedClassroom #GenZEducation #InnovativeTeaching #StudentEngagement #FutureOfEducation #InquiryBasedLearning #CooperativeLearning #SEL #WholeChildApproach #StudentCenteredLearning
