Registrar Ready: Stimulation to Educate, Enlighten and Empower Nat Jansen, Health Education England, discusses his work in trying to provide an equitable experience for trainees undertaking the #RegistrarReady days in the North of England. These days are aimed at trainees prior to starting the second on-call (tier 2) #rota. Previous sessions were delivered on an ad-hoc basis and were variable depending on the location within the region. The team aimed to organise the training days in a more succinct fashion and to deliver more precisely. A #simulation based #medicaleducation was incorporated in the course which trainees found to be relevant and improve their confidence when they take responsibility in real life clinical situations. Standardising has meant that paediatric trainees have an equitable experience when attending the course. The authors hope to integrate this into regional recommendations as part of "readiness for tier 2 rota" e-portfolio entry. This year, we expanded our efforts to integrate early literacy education into medical training across Canada. Through our partnerships with eight institutions, including the Northern Ontario School of Medicine, we’ve ensured that pediatric residents and other healthcare providers receive evidence-based training on how to counsel families about early literacy. By reaching healthcare providers at the start of their careers, we’re making early literacy support a standard part of children’s healthcare, just like measuring growth or checking developmental milestones. Advocacy Miriam webster defines advocacy as: the act or process of supporting a cause or proposal Who have you supported recently? Doc, what keeps you from burning out? It turns out we all need to realize where we have control and take action. We cannot change everything, we can change or work on one thing. This month I was present in a national group of docs trying to dissect and solve burnout. I have to say this was touching and frustrating all at the same time as it was great to meet folks who want change yet the problem is large and daunting. Healthcare burnout is actually a national healthcare emergency, due to the workforce challenges. I also attended the Ohio State Medical Association and their advocacy bootcamp. It was amazing to see the medical students so involved and talented in their state and national level of advocacy skills. The impressive medical students were from; UC, NEOMED, Lerner, OU, UT and OSU. They were stating that they put their time and energy into advocacy since their first year of medical school. I encouraged them to teach other medical students the granular way of learning about and acting in these state and national level meetings to help patients and their families. The medical students had done their homework, they had researched the resolutions, brought supporting data from AMA and confidently stood up to share their expertise. They rocked it! I sure hope they write a poster or manuscript to teach other medical students to advocate, learn and get active in change management and share it nationally. We all have agency to help make tomorrow brighter. Advocating for others and figuring out where we have control and influence is powerful. Our communities need us, the patients need us and your health will be supported by keeping passionate advocates close to you as we all emulate those we hang out with. ?? School is back. There’s really no summer break in value-based care. But Wellvana does bring on a new class of partners this time of year. And most of what happens during our implementation process boils down to education. It’s an education in the Wellvana way to bring about more valuable primary care. And we’re teaching some of the most thoroughly educated people in our society — MDs — so we have to do our homework. Recently, I challenged our team to think of themselves principally as educators. It’s a higher standard. ???? Our Client Success team teaches experienced physician partners new ways to approach care that results in a more streamlined experience for patients, like offering same-day appointments so patients have ER alternatives or remaining involved with a patient’s specialists. ?? Our clinical documentation team teaches practice staff how to accurately capture the condition of patients rather than just how to bill for services. That way Medicare recognizes physicians for how much care each patient may require. ??Even our nurses who support patients between appointments are largely performing an educational role. They teach patients how to make the next best step for their health, creating value for everyone involved. It was Aristotle who said, “Those who know, do.
