As the Lunar New Year celebrations ring around the world, I think of all the celebrations that bring people around the table.?My childhood home was similar in that the dining table was always laden with a banquet. When my mother used to ask me to set the table for guests, I knew that we had better leave plenty of space in the middle for all the dishes she cooked. She was creative with both meat and vegetables and guests still remember her hospitality. Fill the table with food for guests and be modest enough to admit that it may be a small meal. It is not enough to ask if the guest wants more. You must insist that they eat more, even if they initially refuse it. Think about what the guest may need – extra napkins, something else to drink, a small plate to leave bones. I rarely, if ever eat pork. I am not barred from it for religious reasons, just never cared for it much. Friends swoon over duck meat but I stay away from that one too. Most of the time, my intake is chicken and seafood, with rare beef, mutton and lamb along for variety. I am willing to try multiple cuisines and flavors but not much farther in my choice of protein. Being a good guest means that my preferences do not need to be announced at the table. No one wants to hear about the latest diet either. Just eat what you want and appreciate the host or hostess. When your guest leaves your home, walk them to the door and wave goodbye from outside the door. Stay until they walk or drive their car out of sight. A guest should never see a closed door when they look back at your home. The best customer service is customer-based. No one wants to hear about how cool your new gadget is or how long it took you to build it. H Do you know the names of all the seafood in Portugal? o I don’t think even the Portuguese know. w But let’s try to make a list. I’ll start by making a list of my ten favorite ten seaside delicacies, and you continue in the comments. a 1. Sea urchin (“Ouri?o-do-mar”) - this is something, if you wake me up at 3am with an urchin in your hand, I’ll eat it right away. 2. Limpet (“Lapa”) - I like to eat them as well as collect them. 3. Octopus (“Polvo”) - they are not only very smart, but also very tasty. 4. Goose barnacles (“Percebes”) - also translates to “you understand”, so I don’t understand how they can be disliked. 5. Cuttlefish (“Choco”) - I prefer to eat the grilled cuttlefish with the ink: delicious and fun. 6. Mussel (“Mexilh?o”) - in tomato sauce and with coreandre. Mmmm, delicious. 7. Oyster (“Ostra”) - for special occasions. 8. Razor clams (“Canivetes”) - well, it’s something Freudian, if you know what I mean). 9.Winkle (“Burrié”) - and collecting them is a real meditation. 10. Lobster (“Lagosta”) - this is the only representative of the list that I’d prefer to observe than to eat.
