?? Our team were busy last week surveying the salt marsh in Chichester Harbour with Chichester Harbour Conservancy. ?? We’re using a drone to map a control area, where no restoration work has taken place, and gathering baseline data in other areas. It follows work early last year to restore 0.25ha of salt marsh at West Itchenor, and allows us to compare and contrast to see how the area is developing. ??To ensure wildlife wasn’t disturbed, we were joined by Chichester Harbour Conservancy’s Ecologist, and the drone was flown at such a height so as to minimise any disruption to birds. ?? The next step is to piece together the 100s of photos the multispectral drone has taken to create a map. The clever piece of technology is able to capture images in different spectral bands which can help tell us which plants are growing and where, so we can see how the restoration work is progressing. ?? REMOTE SENSING AND MAPPING FOR REEF RESTORATION #coral #seagrass #globaairobservatory #allencoralmap #planning #sustainablelivelihoods #conservation #habitats #marineprotectedareas Even if I have to be in the dud country of world conservation, I can cheer for the others around the globe who have been occupied developing technology we need to restore coral reefs, to connect fragmented systems, and protect marine habitat up to the very point where a back reef flat becomes mangrove swamp. Globally, the case studies show that in many other countries, people have not been fooling around. Reef restoration can employ every level of skill in a community and is ongoing. In many scenarios only snorkelers with cameras are needed to take the tens of thousands of photos to produce a 3-D image of reef conditions. There are many citizen scientist opportunities. We now have methodologies working for precision planning reef restoration, eliminating blind spots and guesswork. Restoring and planting new mangroves is a simple undertaking compared to restoring a reef. Naturally, the very best equipment is "expensive." But, expensive compared to what? I looked up "Specialized systems: Advanced or customized hyperspectral imaging systems, especially those used in research or industry, can cost upwards of $100,000.?" So for less than the cost of a fast boat, another earth-saving hyperspectral imaging system can be purchased, supporting a chain of livelihoods and communities by its presence, giving back to the beauty which has been taken without permission.

This is a fascinating look at what goes into scoping projects; in this case, under the crystal-clear blue waters of Torres Strait.

Last month the Reef Ecologic team ventured to the Torres Strait for a project working with Ergon Energy Network to provide a baseline survey of the benthic habitat between Horn, Thursday and Hammond Islands. Due to the waters being too unsafe to dive, we used a number of survey methods to collect the data. These include using an underwater drop camera, video tows, drone surveys and intertidal quadrat surveys at low tide. Here is a short video of some of the methods we used, as well as a nosey visitor towards the end! ?? Overall it was an amazing trip and was great to experience the beauty and culture of these wonderful islands. BirdCast is estimating that 511 MILLION birds will be migrating over the US tonight. Let’s go Lights Out so they can find their way safely south! ?? “The BirdCast model predicts high-intensity bird migration over your region tonight. Large numbers of birds will be flying! To protect migratory birds in your area, BirdCast and partners recommend turning off all non-essential lighting between 11:00 PM tonight and 6:00 AM tomorrow morning: -turn off or dim any non-essential exterior building lighting; -close curtains or blinds to reduce the escape of interior lighting; and -avoid illuminating lobbies, plants or fountains that may attract birds. Why go Lights Out? Most birds migrate at night, employing an incredible sensory system to navigate and to orient in darkness. Light pollution attracts and disorients these migrating birds, disrupting these systems and increasing birds' vulnerability to collisions with structures. An estimated 365 – 988 million birds die in collisions with buildings annually, including a number of species of high conservation concern. You can help dramatically reduce the hazards from light pollution for nocturnally migrating birds by turning off all non-essential lighting.
