I've had two very interesting, separate and wholly unplanned conversations today about young people in Plymouth weirdly about the same thing. One was with Dr Phil (below) and the other with Sarah Newberry and whilst both were about children from different backgrounds, the discussion was exactly the same - young people don't know what to do when they finish in education. This is obviously nothing new. I'd wager many of the people reading this didn't know what they wanted to do when they left school either. Here's the thing though... If this is the norm, why haven't we normalised it? We know through experience that young people are anxious and confused when they get to the end of education - just like many of us were. We know this is because it feels like a cliff edge, and the impression is that if you haven't made your mind up aged 16 - 18 you will fail. We know that's demonstrable untrue though, so why aren't we (industry) doing much about it? Is there indeed anything we can do about it or is it just part of growing up? Or are there ways in which businesses can demonstrate to young people that it's perfectly okay not to have all the answers when you enter the work place? For the record, I don't know have an answer. I would be keen to hear what other people think though, as on the surface at least it appears to be an age-old problem that no-one has quite found the answer to. Thoughts?

There’s something about being part of a tribe that just speaks to us. Whether it’s family, sports, or joining that random trivia team at the pub. There’s a deep-seated need to feel like we belong.
