The future of coaching isn't about better techniques—it's about a fundamental paradigm shift. In this compelling clip, Professor Peter Hawkins articulates the evolution we need in coaching to address our complex world challenges. After 45 years as a pioneer in the field, his message is clear: we must transcend individual-focused coaching. The central insight? We exist within nested systems—teams, organizations, communities, and ecosystems—that simultaneously exist within us. This isn't abstract philosophy; it's practical reality that transforms how we coach. True transformation happens when coaching moves beyond addressing what the client wants to exploring what their entire ecosystem needs from them. This means coaching shoulder-to-shoulder with our partners, looking outward at their world and the emerging possibilities in that relationship. This systemic approach is exactly what we'll explore in our 2025 Team Coaching Series. Learn how to expand your impact beyond individuals to whole systems that need to become "future fit" for our rapidly changing world. Important and thought provoking. Thank you Peter.
Peter, This is not new thinking and we can not give ourselves credit for this thinking! It has been our indigenous peoples way of life for a thousand years, a lived perspective. When will the coaching community bring our indigenous peoples to the table to share their experiences, and give credit to those who have come before us and have been pointing the way for years. We as a community have not given our ears, minds and hearts to those who have carried and been stewards of this message and perspective for thousands of years
Completely agree!
Absolutely ??
Interestingly teleological which feels driven partly by Wilberian spiralism. Constructs are interesting features of human consciousness. We can try to replace one with another, but let’s remember we are still talking about constructs.
Coaching was born out of a call to consciousness… and humanity’s innate need for connecting us to the spiritual realm in ways that unify us… we are indeed in a crisis and this is the time we came to serve…a clarion call as Meg Wheatley said in early 2000…” we are not making this up! This is our time to serve the Universe!” I cannot imagine not being part of this awakening…though there are moments of reckoning… and even Days of “WTF” right now…we hold the both/and…. cheers Peter!
I benefitted greatly from my training with you on Systemic Team Coaching a few years back. I’ve recently attended training on Warm Data, and it seems like a very good fit with your work. https://batesoninstitute.org/warm-data-labs/
